  • When being the hardass parent bites you in the butt

I noticed something when my oldest daughter was in middle school--- if I let her go somewhere, all of a sudden all her friends' parents also let them go... I had a rep as the hardass parent simply because my dd was grounded so much as a tweener!! So the problem is that other parents might trust me TOO much.

Anyway, now her friend is visiting from Maryland. Her friend is a great girl and she's gone on two mini-trips with us before. She came out to visit Kate over Christmas last year. Her dad has decided that it's a good idea for her to check out some west coast schools while she's out here... So he paid to extend her trip by 1 week so that we have time for a college tour trip. Yay? I mean, maybe I wanted to relax or go back to school shopping the week before the kids go back to school, but I guess I'm taking EVERYONE on a college tour. To LA. Which is not exactly in my neighborhood, but my dd's friend wants to visit UCLA and USC because she's interested in film.. So... Ugh...

I know my dd told her friend that I was planning to take her down to look at colleges in SoCal anyway-- and assumed (as does everyone) that my schedule is totally flexible. Sob.

So we are now heading to SoCal from Sunday to Wednesday next week. I have had a crazy summer of being home for maybe 3-4 days before I have to take off to some other venture. There's been so much laundry involved. I haven't bothered unpacking my travel toiletries bag or putting away suitcases...

For this new trip I have to bring all the kids with me, because Dh's *staycation* week was this past week. And so we need to book 2 rooms or suites. Last minute. In LA. We are booking a place close to Disneyland for 1 night because those hotels are actually the cheapest in the area. For one day I'm dropping the girls off at UCLA and taking all the kids to Universal Studios. The girls are going to find a bus to take them on the 17 minute ride through LA (LOLOLOLOLOL) to USC while the kids and I chill at Universal Studios. We have season passes there. So the little kids are excited to go back to Universal Studios and stay in hotels (they love hotels), but I'm just EXHAUSTED!!!

I can not wait for school to start!!!

And I'm not pissed at the dad or the friend. I really am thankful that someone has lit a fire under my dd's ass to get her thinking college. But I'm just so tired. And this is so last minute so we aren't able to get tours scheduled to some of the schools. I hope they can get a sense of what the schools are like without the tours....

And now that dd is thinking college, she wants to buzz by the Seattle colleges. Because, you know, it's totally practical now. Nevermind that she was only about a 1.5 hour drive away from the Seattle Schools for most of June and July. My parents or sister could have easily taken her there for a daytrip had dd just told me she was interested (which she wasn't at the time). GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Give me a buzz if she starts showing interest in E-burg, Cheney, Spokane, and Pullman. I'm totally up to do a meet up and I can bring our DD1, too.

She is going to look at a college in Spokane. I kind of hate Spokane but I will let you know when we are there!!

And I really really hate Pullman so I'm not pushing that on her at all.

Holy crap Peggy, I would have said no f-ing way!! Is the dad of the friend chipping in for the trip? Just tell your dd after this trip that if she gets into a school you will consider a visit once you see the financial package they are offering. No reason to visit schools until they are accepted.

Well, compared to our hillbilly hell, Pullman is a thriving metropolis.

Take them to UCSB, drop them off on campus and head directly for the first open winery you can find.

Actually if you are thinking vet school wsu is very good. Otherwise I'd only look at the schools on the west side.

Maybe. Population 5000, school population 20,000. Ack!

I have my kids with me though.

                          Sob

Pollyana-- I hear you. But I am glad that dd is getting the exposure to 4 different schools in one swoop-- this will help her narrow down what she wants to apply to. She's looking at a beach (party) school-- small ritzy town, a public city school, a private big city school, and a university town got as hell school (UCRiverside--- close to Palmdale right jenn?). Then we start school and that's pretty much it.

I really think dd sort of said that I was "planning" to take her to UCSB so the dad assumed I was already planning a trip. Which I wasn't. But okay.

Hopefully it will be a good learning experience for them.

I'm probably not doing any more trips until she has applied, been accepted, and has the cost breakdown in hand. I do think there's some value in seeing these kind of schools and comparing.

And she and her friend are going up to San Fran to see the art institute and the university of San Fran this week--- and of course Stanford which is about 8 miles away, on the train line near our house, and I go there twice a week for dr appts on average. And dh works there. So they can figure out how to hit that school. Way way out of my dds league for getting accepted but probably still worth looking at bc it's a beautiful campus.

Oh I'm so sorry to hear that.

Pullman makes me all itchy. Not because if allergies, just because of pure dislike.

My dear little bro went to football camps there and I had to drive over and back to pick him up----- torture!
