Did you fill it out? We are approaching the deadline for dd18. She will be going to school next year and I do not think we would qualify for any financial aid. Does that mean we shouldn't fill out the paperwork?

Newbie here to sending kids to college. And I'm not really excited to have her go, so I am having a hard time motivating myself!!

Definitely fill it out. Even if there isn't aid qualification you automatically qualify for a minimum. I never qualified for anything but the min (like 5k a year I think)

DH had to fill it out for med school. We both filled it out for college. Unless you are paying outright with no loans of any kind or scholarships, it's required. I haven't been filling it out for my post-bacc stuff.

DH and I both fill it out for med school and my grad program. If she's going to have any federal loans that is how you get them, and it may help her qualify for any merit-based aid or other scholarships from her school.

Good to know. She did qualify for a scholarship from one school but I hadn't read about the FAFSA from that one. The state school here has sent us a reminder postcard.

              I need a checklist lol.

She is taking the GI benefits from my husband so we wouldn't likely need to apply for any loans but it's prob better safe than sorry.

We had to fill it out for DS#1 since he was receiving an academic scholarship (requirement of the school).

We just filed ours. It is required at some schools even to be considered for merit aid. Better safe than sorry. There is also one called the CSS/Profile that is required by a few he applied to as well. It is not free but supposedly kinder to families with money. I don't expect we will qualify. DS was already awarded merit aid for one school before we filed the FAFSA, so it's not required everywhere.

I would guess that taking the GI bill would disqualify her from any other federal loan, but I'll fill out the paperwork. Dh is taking the kids to visit family next week for a few days. I'll have time then. I am staying back to watch the dogs and my dd18 and her friend who's coming to visit.

Definitely fill it out and check if any schools need a CSS. It's necessary to do so for some private schools: https://profileonline.collegeboard.o...ionServlet.srv

It's a bigger pain than the FAFSA since it's more thorough but you can get it done in 20-30 minutes. Good luck!!!

The old mantra check with the school always applies. We did NOT fill it out. It wasn't needed for his merit scholarship and we were much more likely to get calls for donations than offers of money!!!!

Interesting, we've yet to get a call for donations except from my alma mater but they would have no way to know what my dh does or what our FASFA for our daughter looks like.

Do any other folks find that they get asked for donations because of their FASFA?

I used to work for my alumni fund, and I can say that the FAFSA was not taken into account in making calling lists. Organizations use other services - list/information brokers - to purchase information about income, demographics, and other aspects of a giving profile. If you file taxes, particularly if you donate to other charitable organizations and deduct that on your taxes, an organization can buy information about your giving potential. I don't think the FAFSA has much to do with it.
