I used to work for my alumni fund, and I can say that the FAFSA was not taken into account in making calling lists. Organizations use other services - list/information brokers - to purchase information about income, demographics, and other aspects of a giving profile. If you file taxes, particularly if you donate to other charitable organizations and deduct that on your taxes, an organization can buy information about your giving potential. I don't think the FAFSA has much to do with it.

I agree that the calls for donations have nothing to do with the fafsa. DH and I get freaking pounded with calls and requests for money - but it hasn't changed since about 5 years after graduation. I don't think it has anything to do with our income at all (since it was like nothing until this last year). Plus it's pretty easy to just say no to those requests even if they do know how much money you make.

It still galls me that DH's med school (where we paid over $260K for his education) hit us up DURING RESIDENCY for donations. How 'bout I make that check out to "Fuck you"?

Any school raking in at least $65M per graduating class can kiss my ass when they come begging for donations.

I just don't want the school to have any information about what we make... And yes, I stay off the grid pretty well. I google my name and only other people with my name come up. I have absolutely no presence on the web.

Not to freak you out, but I wouldn't be so sure about that. There are a LOT of sneaky peeps who can find info online. You might be shocked what people can find.

The only thing that surprised me about the FAFSA was that it included registration for Selective Service for my son. It's not like he wouldn't have done it at 18 and it's not like we have a draft, but checking that "Register Me" box felt bad to mommy here.

I don't understand why girls don't need to register. It seems laughable given the current makeup of the military.

Eta: I don't think males should need to register either.

But if they register males, they should also register females. JMHO.

I agree with both of you. I don't want to register my daughter, but it's weird that it's just guys. And yes, it feels AWFUL, Heidi. They now take SS registrations at 17 years and 3 months and it is coupled to FAFSA review. You can also do it in person when you turn 18. They say that if you do not register, you will never be able to be employed by the government even as a contractor and you are ineligible for many programs and all federal funding. (Because I had to google "what if I don't register". *eyeroll*)

We started getting calls from OU within months of graduation. They staff the center with students so I'm always nice but say, "sorry husband is still in school. Call us back in about 8 years"
