Tweens and periods

Zoe is 11. She got her period at the end of May and was very prepared for it. We talked a lot and she talked with Amanda too. She has had a period every 2 weeks this summer 😕 and she is begging me for tampons 😱. She's 11. Do they make tampons for her size? Do I dare consider this option? We've discussed "how" to insert them but I don't know how comfortable I'd be teaching.

Any thoughts/advice?

I would let her try maybe sport tampons or light ones to see how she feels. Experiment with different sizes/brands, make sure she knows how to avoid scented and how to properly dispose of them, etc.
Also, remind her to never attempt or practice putting one in unless she is on her period -- painful life lessons abound! 😂

I didn't get my period until 13 but my mom tossed me a box of tampons, said no one ever wore pads because they were gross and to figure it out. So...I did.

She definitely can use them. I agree with Thirteen that some general usage advice from you and Amanda (lightest flow possible, change them, etc) would be good but I bet she understands the concept well enough since she has had her period for a while.

She should totally use them. There are really good illustrations online from the companies. Most importantly she sees YOU as the primary source of information.
You're her most import resource. Watch the videos and wait outside the door incase she needs a high five or help. You're a lucky mom. AS a health teacher I can't tell you how many kids don't talk to their moms.

I feel like she's expecting me to show her and then watch her. Even though we're all open about our bodies and periods it just crosses the line for me although I feel it shouldn't. Our boys are well- prepared for marriage lol

I found tampons with plastic applicators most easy to use when first starting out. Good luck! Parenting sounds totally bananas.

I remember when my mom gave me a box of tampons and told me to figure it out. The box had pretty good instructions.

Yes to what's been said. Lexi uses them frequently because she's a swimmer.

I also highly recommend the Thinx period underwear.

Keep an eye on Zoe's cycles. They should start to regulate. Find out how much she is bleeding. Is it truly a period every two weeks or spotting?

Thanks for the comments. I can't imagine just handing her a box of tampons. I like the video idea. Heidi, it's definitely not spotting. Thankfully, no cramps. Knock on wood.

Me too. So when you go to the bathroom, it's just like a mess of blood in your underwear? How does that not wick into your clothes if it shifts?
