Faux Finish??

We are getting estimates to put a faux finish on our kitchen walls and eating area. We think it will look very nice with a stucco finish (venetian plaster). It just occurred to me that if we move, permanently changing the texture on the walls may not appeal to potenital buyers. Would you do something like that to your kitchen walls?

I would do it. I am a believer in "live in your house". If you don't do what you want because you may sell down the road that isn't fair to you. You have earned the right to have what you want NOW!!!!!!!

It depends on how long you plan to be in the house. Texture is a whole different type of pain to remove if you don't like it. I think it is worse than wallpaper scraping - and way more painful than paint colors. I'd be wary. If you think you might change your mind in the near future....just skip it.

Obviously, I am a woman that has spent a lot of time undoing the fashions of previous generations. Texturized walls are the worst. Messy, messy. We almost always end up just replastering smooth - or replacing with drywall.

We aren't planning on moving from this house, except that DH is interviewing. If good results come from that, then we may be heading out by summer. It is really up in the air. However, I don't think we personally would regret the texturizing, just if it would ward off potential buyers.

If you're remotely close to selling, or the possibility of, then don't do it. The market is so hard right now, I wouldn't want to toss another variable into it.

Having just spent months looking at houses, I can tell you that the ones we didn't even bother considering were the ones with decorating trends that needed to be redone. One house (probably not so ironically) owned by a surgeon who didn't bother to finish before moving had been stuccoed for Venetian plaster- everywhere- ceilings, walls, stairways. and only the kitchen was completed.) I think it looks nice but I think it's one of those design trends that will quickly lose it's appeal to the larger market.

Of course, this is coming from the woman who has to contend with faux marble crown molding and chair rails...

Jennifer -- I think you should wait until you know if you are moving or not. I agree with Luanne about making your house the way you want to live but your potential to move sounds imminent.
