    washing a down jacket

    So I spilled Indian food on my new down coat .

    When I looked at the tag there is very vague washing directions.

    The brand is Patagonia so I will visit their website for more info -- but I'm scared to do this myself!!!!

    Anybody have any experience with this???? The coat is cute, warm, expensive, and new. I don't want to WRECK it!!!!

    I threw mine in the wash with no ill effects- I think it's more to do with the outer fabric than the inner feathers- at least that's what I told myself (Ducks are in the water all the time...)

    Mine was from Land's End and it washed up beautifully. I also dried it in the dryer, too.

      I dry clean mine just in case. But I think if I had my own washer and dryer with more than 3 settings, I'd probably try to do it myself.

        I'm going to try to wash mine this weekend b/c I got grease on it while installing the new GDO last weekend - let me know what luck you have. But I've been told you can wash them but you should dry them with a tennis ball so the down doesn't clump...

            What do you know? I just got a Patagonia down sweater (the lightweight jacket) in the mail last night from my dad for my birthday...that was in July.

            The directions have those little symbol dealies but I'm pretty sure it means wash in cold water, no bleach, no iron. The tag also says no fabric softener and for best results, throw 2 tennis balls in the dryer. When I wash our down comforter, I use less soap or Wool-Lite and cold water on the delicate cycle and then dry on the low or no-heat option.

              I wash mine at least every 3 weeks ( get thrown up on a lot) I wash it and dry it, but put either a tennis ball or sneaker in the dryer with it so the down doesn't clump....

                Well, down must hav ebeen popular this season. I just got one too and washed it for the first time last week. Mine is Eddie Bauer. I threw it in the washer on delicate by itself and then tumble dried it on low. I only did this becasue I was afraid that the outer fabric would get ruined otehrwise. My thoughts were...I wash my down blanket/throw/duvet all the time...why should the jacket be any different?
