  • Bee update

My bees flew the coop! At least a big bunch of them did.

I saw some big groups buzzing around the hive and didn't think much of it since they do that sometimes. Then I saw the mass exodus, lots of activity, and this in the tree in the backyard:

I saw which of the two hives they came out of and thought about a plan. A plan with a toddler at home and baby who wants to be constantly held...hmmm.

Since it is staying light later, I could take care of it after DH got home. I called my mom and asked for some advice as well. Of course ( ), the kids each had their own meltdowns before bed and I helped DH. That meant I got outside late.

Stupidly, I decided I did not need the smoker and didn't start a fire in it. My plan was to open up the old hive, take a quick peek, saw the branch off the tree and dump the bees back in. Usually the bees just want to get back in the hive and its not too big a deal.

For some reason, my bees make a lot of propolis and like to really cement everything together. I couldn't get the lid off of the hive. No matter, right? No one is home! WRONG. I'm prying away at the lid, lifting the hive off the base, letting it drop back down...and hearing some buzzing. I get the lid off and there are still LOTS of bees in there and they are not so happy about being disturbed (I was in there a little late in the day).

I go and look at the clump again and realize that there is no way I can saw off the branch because they are in a couple of branches and I need another set of hands to keep it from falling on the ground.

I went back to the hive, put a new box on it (to give them more room, maybe that is why they swarmed?), called it a night and went back inside for a glass of wine.

The bees in the tree swarmed off somewhere else. It's been rainy. I'm sure they are dead but what can you do?

Oh dear. Sorry about your missing / dead bees ... but I have to say that turned out a whole lot better than I thought it would. Right around the line about 'not needing the smoker' I stopped and put my hands on my face ... afraid to read the next line.

I really want some honey - so I want you to be successful (for you too, I guess ) but PLEASE BEE CAREFUL!

Yikes - you are so much more brave then I! Haven't I heard a lot lately about a lot of bees leaving their hives in the US?!?!

I have heard some of that as well, that there is possibly some disease that is killing off the hives. That is bad news for crop pollination.

Everything has settled down now. I just need some better weather and time when DH is home to go check things out when they aren't so riled up.

I just couldn't believe how big that clump in the tree was and that there were still bees in the hive! I've been watching it over the last few days and it has a normal level of activity. No wonder they swarmed -- they were packed in there.

          And again. :waiting:

This is about 25 feet off the ground. They are on their own. But, geez, that is a ton of bees! I can't believe they all crammed in there with the ones that swarmed last week.

            Whoa! Very cool!

I can't believe that you've got leaves on your trees. We haven't got much going on here as far as flowers, leaves, etc.

I am hoping the clip was about the US honey Bee population and the new theory about cell phones!

                          I just want honey.

I had read recently that the problem with the disappearing bees (which is a pretty big problem it seems) is caused by....cell phone use. Apparently the signals from the phones and towers screw up whatever helps the bees navigate.

                          Very weird. And, problematic.

It's a video - I'm so ADHD I can't sit still through one. That's most likely why I didn't watch it. :P For some reason I can sit still long enough to read, though. Another reason I don't watch television....

I am assuming it's the same info I linked to in written form? :hey:
