The place we'll be moving to is fully carpeted and we'll need a vacuum cleaner. I'm not planning on having carpeting in a house that we'll buy at some point, so I'm not sure if investing into a Dyson right now is worth it. What cheaper vacuum can I buy to last me for a year? Are there good carpet-to-hardwood models that I'll be able to keep for a few years?

I have to agree with getting the Dyson.... My entire downstairs is hardwood and tile and it's a dream not having to sweep. So although you won't have carpet for very long, it's still very useful!Charlene~Married to an attending Ophtho Mudphud and Mom to 2 daughters

I have two dogs, two cats, and all hardwood floors. I love the dyson, it is wonderful. OK, I feel dorky now.Luanne

I did a comparison of all the models online. They are all the same except for features. I would do a comparison.
I think if and when I get one it will be the DC15 animal.

I have an Oreck and absolutely love it. I can't remember how much it cost - but my Dad has had his for 20 years and it's still going strong. One nice thing is they have storefronts all over the country where you can bring it to get it serviced each year and maintained for free. It works like a dream on hardwood floors and carpet.
Dyson must be nice too - I never tried one of those.

This isn't really cheaper than a dyson, but I just got myself a miele and ohh, I love love love it! I got an s4 galaxy and it easily and quickly sucked up all of the dirt, fur, etc and is quiet to boot. Right now I only have wood floors so I just have the floor tool, but you can add a carpet head and other accessories. I love my mieleWife to Hand Surgeon just out of training, mom to two lovely kittys and little boy, O, born in Sept 08.

If you live in a smaller city research WHERE you can get your Dyson or other brand serviced!!! You don't want to drive hours to fix your appliance!
(We wanted some appliances that could not get serviced in our area -- a miele coffe maker was one of them.)
Hopefully this is something NONE of you have to deal with!Flynn

Prepare yourself - when we switched from the Oreck to the Dyson, I wanted to move, so much stuff came out of our carpet. You wouldn't believe how much human hair (and we have a dog) can get trapped! I finally made DH finish the first couple of passes. I didn't realize we had been living in filth!-Deb

I'm totally in love and can't stop raving about my new baby. It's awesome. From now one I will always listen to you guys (except for shoe suggestions). I forgot the original color of my old area rugs. It's currently proudly sitting in the middle of the living room. I'm not ready to put it away just yet.
