knitting / yarn question

A thread compatability question - I'm knitting a blanket for Lilly and when I started it was going to be alternating white and green squares. The two threads that I have are different brands (long story!) and even though they are both 100% acrylic, they feel different. The green feels tackier/stickier/not as soft and the fibers aren't as plump as the white ones. Do you think that the two threads will even out once the blanket is washed a few times?

I've also considered just making a white blanket and using the green to make an "L" in the middle since the threads are different and maybe it won't be so obvious.....

Or should I just make a white blanket? The entire blanket is 36 squares and I've already made about 15 white ones.

I'm confused. Squares? Are you knitting or crocheting? Regardless, I think you've identified the issues involved. I think that blocks of different yarns that feel different will always feel different. Whether this is a problem or not is up to you. If the green is thinner yarn, can you just double it up, do one square, and see how it compares? I know you can try that if you're actually knitting, but I don't know enough about crocheting to know if you can do that or not.

Poky - I thought that would be the answer (that they probably won't even out to the same softness/plumpness).

I am knitting. The pattern that I have says to make 36 individual squares that are 25 stiches wide by 36 rows long and then sew them together to make a blanket that is roughly 30 inches by 30 inches.

Ah. I guess that makes a certain amount of sense. Were it me, where you are, I'd look for another color in the exact same yarn as the white, and use that, then use the green for something else entirely. If that's not an option, I'd probably just do all white for this project, if you have enough of it.

I didn't even think about having gauge problems. Doh! Good point!

Luckily, I sweet talked DH into going back to Hobby Lobby and they had just received a shipment of yarn made by the same brand (I love this yarn!) and he found a nice pinky/purpley color that will work nicely.



I'm not sure how to do the embroidery spotty_dog. (I'm new to all of this!) But I'm intrigued! I have an extra skeen of white so maybe I'll make a second blanket and see if I can figure out how to embroider. I'm not sure that is covered in my Knitting for Dummies book so that might be an excuse for a new book!

What's the pattern you're using? Is it simple enough to just post?
