    OMG...highway robbery.

We are having our wooden floors extended throughout the house next week and it will include the stairs. We didn't budget for the carpet runners because we though "how much could they cost?" Ummmmmm between 18-30$ a foot. WHAT????

Ouch. We need to get that too. I think it will be worth having, if that helps.

Yep. They really get you money wise. Stair runners are spendy.

They look awesome though and small children don't kill themselves going up and down however!!!!

      I love mine.

        Flynn,

How did you pick the color/style etc?
Do the do some sort of carpet things on the landings too? We have stairs that basically go up, stop at a landing, turn around and keep going. How does that work.

Man...I'm so shocked by the cost.

Okay I know altogether TOO MUCH on this topic.

How did I pick the color/style?
Choose something that wears well and is ranked as a good "high traffic" carpet. I would pick something that has either flecks of different color, texture, or both. I chose a cross between a gold and a taupe. It's warm but definitely a neutral.

When your stairwell goes up, stops at a landing and then goes a different direction you have (from what I understand) two options.

#1) Your carpet goes up and stops going the correct direction. Then there is a space for the rest of the landing and the carpet continues when the stairs start.

Here's what our landing looks like and the stairs going to the upper floor. Note the space between where the runner stops and the second floor carpet begins.

Here's what the runner looks like from the main floor.

Here is the stairs from the landing going to second floor.

#2) Same as above but without the space. I think this might look better but the margin for error is large from what I've been told. Plus if you have texture like a stripe -- it tends to look funny.

Sorry about the shadows! The sun is out today. Weird!

              Re: Stair runners

How would you end the stair runner if you do not continue the carpet at the top of the stairs? I'm going to keep that wood floor and maybe put a runner (not fixed) along the hallway when you turn the corner.

I'm thinking I will end it at the riser on the top step?

I'm sure the carpet people will give me some pointers but I'm not ready to do that yet.

I think it would be right up to the lip over the top step.
