  • Furnace Fun

Ahhh...living in a house built in 1930...fun times. So, last year the furnace was serviced 3 times $$ for various issues. It was our first winter in the house (and first time homebuyers), so we weren't sure what to expect. This year, we decided to be proactive and get the full cleaning/tuning/etc. back in sept, with the hopes of minimizing service calls.

Well, Monday night the furnace started smoking. Black smoke filled my basement -which is a scary thing!! I had to call the emergency number and pay the high fee for off hours service. Turns out that the furnace needed to be cleaned. I asked the service man why a furnace that was supposedly fully serviced in Sept needs to have a full service again in January. He shrugged and said a cleaning should last 1 year. He further stated that there is nothing wrong with our furnace, it was just dirty. So, I'm mad. I've now paid twice for the same service. I very rarely file complaints or disputes, but I don't think I should have to pay for this service twice. I am waiting for the service manager to call me back.

    Anyone with similar furnace woes?

Did you use the same place both times? Do you have the receipt from the Sept. cleaning? If so - any company worth their salt will comp you this latest episode AND beg your forgiveness. If you used different companies you'll probably be stuck paying for it, but I'd still raise a stink and report them to BBB / Angie's List etc.

I haven't had that problem. Both our houses had new furnaces, so we've been lucky (knocking on wood).

      Try 1907!

Actually, the house itself is in great shape, it's just the stuff everyone has done to her in the middle years.
Unfortunately for us the intervening people fancied themselves 'do-it-yourselfer' extraordinaires. and it turns out that they made some significant tactical errors.

and now that the entire HVAC system has been replaced AND the master bath redone (including having the foundation joists propped up) and both the washer and dryer replaced...

we celebrated our one year anniversary of living here just about a month ago.
