  • Doll Collection...

So, I have a ginormous doll collection from my childhood and my parents packed them all up and I've had them in the attic. Well, obviously, an attic in San Antonio is no place for dolls.

I got out my grandmother's baby doll shortly after we moved here and today I've been opening and dragging out all of the other boxes. I have them temporarily on display in the office (good thing I had all of those shelves done.) But, I really, really don't want them on display there forever. Most are really interesting as they're dolls that various family members picked up while traveling. Eventually I want them in my room, I suppose.

I don't know! Maybe I'll just turn the office into the travel room and we can put all of the various things we've picked up along the way in there. (except for Nikolai, I'm not sure he'd do well just standing in the corner.)

Anyone else struggling with what to do with stuff from childhood?

    Jenn

(PS- although I have to say, Rick's sports trophies are going to remain packed away in the attic.)

    Re: Doll Collection...

Jenn, I have a similar problem! I have a Madame Alexander doll collection that my parents bought for me all along my childhood. I know the dolls are worth money and I haven't "played" with them. Still.....I feel like my mom will KILL me if I sell them. DD doesn't have any interest and I think it's a little odd to have a bunch of big decorative dolls out in our living room. So....what to do? They are all in storage still. I do have a set of small dolls from around the world that I have displayed on curio shelves here and there. Those I would keep out. The big Gone with the Wind Scarletts and the assorted other period dolls? Oy.

I have trophies in a box in the basement from my glory days. I keep them to prove to the kids I was "all that" in school. (They are all geek awards for science and academics, though. No sports related honors. )

DH's childhood stuff is still migrating to our house. His parents have stayed put in the family home. Mine split and sold the house when I was in college, so my childhood stuff has followed me in boxes for over a decade now.

My MIL started a madame alexander doll collection for DDs. She has told me to keep them in the box as they are valuable. I am like, why give a kid a doll and then tell them they cant even play with it  DD really doesnt even know of their existence as they are in a closet.

        Re: Doll Collection...

I put the Madame Alexander dolls away- back to the attic. They're really not all that interesting compared to the rest of them. I have an awesome selection of Caribbean and Asian dolls. I did manage to combine boxes and now only have three boxes of dolls in the attic. (Holly Hobby? Raggety Anne? The baby I pretended was my brother as I threw her down three flights of stairs?)

and then I started remembering that Trilogy of Terror movie that was always on after school- remember the one about the doll that came to life and started murdering people?

We had a house fire when I was in high school that took care of this little problem!!!!!

I'm in the same boat. While cleaning out closets last week I came across my doll collection. Most were given to me by my late grandmother so I don't want to get rid of them. Some of the dolls are just decorative and, even though they bring back fond memories of my grandma, I hate clutter so in boxes they shall remain.

I, too, have many items in boxes that are attached to fond memories or belonged to people that I loved and have died. I read a book about decluttering and it suggested to take a picture of such items.

Made sense to me. Sounded like a great idea. Ok - so have I done it? Nooooo...

Just wanted to pass on the idea in case it worked for anyone else at the risk of being a "do as I say - not as I do"
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!
