Okay - here's the challenge. I need baby related sewing projects. Tasteful ones please ... LOTS of them. My MIL is an obsessive sewer w/mad skills and NO taste (see pic of baby-doll dishtowels for reference). I've decided that I must channel her energies and give her things I want (patterns & fabric picked out by me, of course).

So far I've got the crib set plan - which will take her no time at all, and these cute baby kimonos I found on Martha Stewart's website. I NEED MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmmm. Bibs? Blankets? Spit-up cloths (someone once gave me cloth diapers with cute material sewn to the backs, they are THE BEST spit-up cloths since they're so absorbent and adorable)? Nightgown/sleepers?

        hooded towels, burp cloths

        diaper bag, small travel bag

one of those shopping cart cover things

When's the baby due? If it's winter, you could get her to do one of those car seat zip-up sacks to keep baby warm on the go.

Everyone has had great ideas for you.

There are a few fun ones on here with tutorials, it's the maker of the Michael Miller fabric:

Sewmamasew had a childrens clothing sew off a while back

One piece slings like the hotsling should be fairly easy to make. I think if you pick all of the fabrics then it is hard to make it really hideous.

                Thanks guys!

Alison - I haven't decided if I'm taking the cloth diaper plunge yet. I just don't know if I have it in me. I have a hard enough time keeping up with our laundry.

I appreciate all of the links! Davita & I hit JoAnn's this morning and found an "Idiot's Guide to Sewing" group of patterns for bibs, boppys, cart covers, etc. MIL is actually quite capable -- she's just got HIDEOUS taste. Need I remind anyone of these beauties??

The upside of their current plan to visit just a week after returning from a month-long trip to Europe is that she won't have had time to sew me a bunch of useless crap.

And diaperless newborn bums are mine! (as long as there isn't flying poo and even then I am very forgiving)

Hey all you fabric-philes! I just discovered that fabric.com is also on ebates - so you get 5% back. Their inital prices are comparable to the other sites I've been looking at. Shipping is pretty steep - but for your first purchase you get shipping for $2.95 . My favorite part about fabric.com (so far) is that you can return it (free shipping on returns). I was really bummed when the colors on my michael miller fabric weren't what I was hoping for.
