Has anyone used Home Depot's contractors or knows anyone who has used them? What was you/ their experience?

    Re: Home Depot Contractors

My neighbor had a nightmare experience with having a hardwood or pergo-type floor installed. The contractors did a half-assed job, she called the store and requested that someone else come back and fix it, the same (creepy) people came back and fixed it. They still didn't do as good of a job as they should have. Maybe others have had better luck.

My mom had Home Dept a few years for a kitchen remodel. Most of the work was pretty good. A couple things were shotty.

We used contractors through Lowe's once (I assume they're probably pretty similar to the ones used by Home Depot?). We had carpet installed in our basement and they did a good job, we were pleased.

we need to get a *very* small kitchenette [more like a kitchen corner] redone and carpet installed. We are looking for stock cabinet installation nothing fancy - no granite, nothing like that.

WOW - lots of negative feedback. I appreciate it - sorry you mostly had bad experiences

We have been asking around and can't get a good recommendation for anyone down here. Our neighbor had their place redone, they don't recommend their contractor = he disappears.

Any ideas on how to find a decent local contractor?

I would check on Angie's List. From what you describe, maybe a skilled handyman could install what you purchase from HD or Lowe's. Lily's experience sounds similar to my neighbors and we are on opposite coasts.

Is there a Costco in your area? We had our carpet replaced through them and I am very pleased with the price, quality of carpet, and quality of the work. We had two installations -- the carpet and the runners -- and both times they called us to make sure everything was what we wanted. I did have to call them a few times to check on dates and such but I always got in touch with them and they showed up when they said they would, etc.

It's funny because two contractors we know [who are not from this area and cannot do the work] recommended HD because "at least if something goes wrong or the guy takes off you have a place to go and complain" - not the best recommendation. We have just heard so many horror stories with contractors disappearing but it appears that HD offers no better solution

I've never heard of Angie's List but will go find it and check it out.

And yes, we do have a Costco. I didn't think of them for carpet but will look there.

                    Re: Home Depot Contractors

I didn't have any complaints but my feeling was that Costco would have been responsive. HD paid my neighbor lip service. I think Costco screens their installers more carefully. My mom got a granite counter through Costco (different city than me) and had a delay because Costco switched installers because of quality issues. At least that is the reason they gave.

Good luck! I agree with Lily's suggestion of finding a handyman.
