Follow-up question: based on some prelim research on Amazon, they mainly come in two shapes for the top and two for the bottom. The top can either have the arms pointing up or down and the bottom can be a tripod or a stick. Is one design better than the other?

Well, the tripod vs stick is easy; the stick will have to be put INTO the ground, somehow, right? And the tripod can rest on the ground without being in it. I'm pretty sure the up vs flat/down is just a matter of taste and how they collapse, though I may be wrong.
The tripod ones I saw at amazon looked smaller than most of the stick ones; but they may still be big enough.Sandy

If the stick can go into the ground, go with that- go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a piece of PVC pipe about 2 feet long that is slightly bigger than the outside diameter of the pole. Then take a rubber mallet, and hammer that pvc pipe into the ground- leave the PVC pipe in the ground and you'll never have to worry about how to put up the pole again.
I would mark it somehow - my parents 'lost' the hole every spring.

Yeah, if you can do it, putting it into the ground is probably a little more stable (wet clothes can be heavy!).Sandy
