  • Looking to get a new vacuum cleaner--any recs?

I'm looking to buy a new vacuum cleaner. Our current cheap one is terrible and always smells like burning plastic when we use it. I'd ideally like one with a HEPA filter. I've heard good things about Dysons. I did a search on this forum for vacuum cleaners but didn't find any threads.

If anyone can recommend a good vacuum cleaner, I'd love to hear it!

I think everyone here would say, "DYSON!!!" Well most everyone.

And the others would say Miele.

Dyson. Dyson Animal if you have animals.

No threads? They must not have survived the forum move! There were odes written about the Dyson.

And for a while several members had a pic of their Dyson as their avatar!

I purchased a dyson after that thread and still love it...although it's a bit heavy especially when preggo!

I've been researching vacuum cleaners all day and I've read mixed reviews about Dysons. I think the Animal is too expensive right now, so what other specific models of Dysons or others would you recommend? Another question: with the bagless vacuums, do you have to empty the canister after each use or weekly or so? Also, I need a vacuum that works as well on hardwood as carpet.

The gardenweb forums usually have good reviews of household stuff. I don't think a Dyson would be a good choice for hardwood floors...at least I don't like using mine on them. I have the yellow ball one and I purchased the animal attachment separately. I don't use the attachment all that much honestly but it does do a great job getting up hair. I empty after every use....and have recently started rinsing the canister and parts with water once a month. Helps with the lingering dog smell...

This is the attachment...I know I've mentioned it before in other threads.

We love the Dyson, but if it's out of your price range, it doesn't work for you. I think this month's Good Housekeeping had a blurb on vacuum cleaners. They weren't in love with the Dyson, so I'm not sure if I trust their judgment.
Their top pic was the Miele (which is pricier than a Dyson), but it seems a close second was the Eureka Boss Smart Vac Pet Lover (and it's under $200). They liked it on both hardwood and carpet. It was heavier and louder than the others, but it was also less than a quarter of the price. The reviews were good enough that I'm trying to justify getting it and moving my Dyson to the basement where we have the most carpeting (and no cleaning lady, so I end up vacuuming there three times to my one for the rest of the house, anyway...).

Miel. Awesome. Fantastic on wood & carpet though u need different attachments for wood/smooth or carpet. I love mine! My friend who was visiting said it was a joy to use

This is what we have, its a Hoover, only about $100 and its great for people with allergies (although it doesn't say it, it uses a HEPA filter). I love it, but I've never had a dyson or miel.

Consumer Reports did an issue on vacs a while back and came to the conclussion that Dysons weren't worth the money. Their top-rated vac ended up being a pretty inexpense Hoover. "The Boss", I think it was called.

I dunno, we don't have either. I'm just impressed that our vac has survived a shedding, 175 lb. malamute.
