  • Space heater recommendations

Here I am, starting another thread in the Around the House forum.

I'm looking for recommendations for space heaters. I only experienced about a week's worth of winter here in KC and my electricity consumption was insanely high. This time, I want to cut it down a bit, but I don't want to be miserable.

I was thinking about buying this oil-filled heater and setting it to turn on an hour or two before I wake up every morning, so that I don't dread getting out of bed. I would then use it in the office during the day. I personally like it because it doesn't blow hot air in my face and it doesn't make a peep, but my plan has been met with resistance. My mom and DH say it takes a long time for oil-filled heaters to get hot. I get that, but I think that's something I can live with, especially since this model comes with a 24-hour programmable timer. Am I going to be sorely disappointed?

And while I'm at it, what temperature do you keep your house at during the fall and winter?

It looks similar to the one we have. Ours doesn't have a timer, neat feature! Ours works great for one room. It heats fairly quickly, is quiet and doesn't have an odor or anything. When we all shared a room, we kept the house at just above freezing, but kept our bedroom roasty-toasty.

Our Shreveport house (good insulation) we kept at 81 in the summer and 65-68 in the winter. This Dallas house has cracks and air leaks everywhere...my first two months here have spent more in electricity than 6 months in Shreveport.....with similar climate!

Not sure what price point you want to be at, but we bought a small electric fireplace!! So warm, heats us out of the bedroom some nights. And it is cozy!
WE have something a little larger than this one.

Sophie's room currently doesn't have heat (she sleeps in a glorified closet) but we use an oil filled heater. I like a lot and will probably buy my own if I need one once we move out...

Thanks! I think I'll go ahead and order it. Brandi, I'm looking for something a bit more portable, but that looks really neat.

I ended up ordering it from Costco because of the added peace of mind. For the most part, it's what I wanted. It works great in the office and bedroom, but not so well in the living area, because of its size. It tries to heat the entire room instead of blowing hot air on you, so I imagine I wouldn't feel warm until the entire living area was heated. That's the downside of having an open living space which is also probably poorly insulated. Oh well, I can always use the MicroSherpa blanket I also got at Costco. It's the softest thing ever.
