If you do a search you'll be able to find the thread about this very topic from a few months ago. There was a huge debate about Dysons, which I'm with you, I hate. We bought an el cheapo and love it!

I will have to look. At this point I think a Hoover would be better.

We have a Kenmore and it's been great. Before purchasing it several years ago, we took a look at Consumer Report's ratings on vacuums. Kenmore received good reviews, at least back then. I'd at least check out a Kenmore vacuum.

I'm not particularly happy with my Dyson either. I followed all of the instructions to clean it out and it still does not pick up lint, hair, threads, etc. I think before I give up, I'm going to see about a servicing.

Anyhoo, I found the thread with the vaccum recs: http://www.medicalspouse.com/forums/...&daysprune=100

My mom swears by her Hoover BOSS. It's a freakishly good and cheap vac.

I JUST bought one on Saturday after the Dyson died. I had the first generation Dyson and it ROCKED but quality has apparently not continued. I went on to the Consumer Reports site and the Hoover Windtunnel (w/ bags) was their number one rated upright so off to the PX we went and there it was. Now, compared to the Dyson it is heavier and louder and generally not as fun but it has a light (which I love) and I love the fact that it has a red light when you're vacuuming and it turns green when it's all clean. Love that! It doesn't fit all of the places that the Dyson did but it does fit under the bed and other furniture better than the old Dyson did.

My husband just bought himself the Dyson (the smaller one) for the DC house so I guess we'll have our own Consumer Reports assessment in the comfort of our own home.

Do you have a model name or number Jenn? I'm seeing several bagged windtunnels on Amazon.....
I don't see a Meile in my immediate future but my Christmas wish this year is for a vacuum that actually works.

Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Edition U6485-900 (this is the one we bought because the first one (the #1 rating) is $400 and this one is $230 retail.

Check out the Hoover Tempo Widepath while you're at it. It got 72/100 points on Consumer Reports, only 2 points behind the top vacuum, and it's much cheaper than all of them. It also has a ton of positive reviews on Amazon. If my vacuum ever dies, I plan on getting that one.

                      http://www.amazon.com/Hoover-Widepat...dp/B0009ONZ8G/

BTW, I have a 5 year old Bissell Cleanview Powertrak Deluxe that works beautifully. It even has the red/green light indicator that Jenn mentioned. Still going strong.

EDIT: Forget what I said. After reading a couple of reviews and comments on Amazon, it seems that they updated the model, but they're still selling it under the same model number. Apparently the new one sucks. Not literally.
