I was just going to suggest a bag of money and a really good handyman....

ETA: since you wanted the list for diy projects disregard the handyman, the endless bag of money should sufice, until you get in over your head, then you'll need the handyman

A really good basic repair guidebook is helpful, too. My husband is clueless but with step by step pictures he can manage to get some things done without killing himself or setting the house on fire.

I was curious so I checked Amazon for something like that. I'm wondering if this is the one DCJenn was referring to:

We're not doing any renovations on our own but are comfortable hanging a picture or doing something similar. Also my dad is ok with tools and we have a friend who comes over and helps. I would love a good book recommendation too.

Sounds hokey, but DH has the TIME/LIFE series for DIYers and he loves them. Anytime we encounter a project he's never attempted, out come the books.

My folks have the same series purchased back in the late 70's or early 80's. They still use them as does my BIL. I'm not sure if there is an update for newer techology.

Great site, thanks. Now I just need to find time to compile a list and get my ass to the store. Will try to flip through the HD book while there. One of our friends suggested I go to Sears and get Craftsman tools instead of going to HD or Lowes. Sears is the furthest store from us but I don't mind going if it's worth it.

I have several Home Depots and Lowes close to me, but I shop at only one of the Home Depots 90% of the time. Most of their employees seem to be retired craftsmen, and willing to teach!!!!!! Tuesday mornings are the best time, as they tend to be very slow and they usually have the time to talk and teach.

MissCrabette, did you end up getting that book? I'm thinking about getting a good basic how-to book and was trying to decide between the one you linked and the HomeDepot Home Improvement 1-2-3 book.
