  • Bathroom renovation

DH had his first vacation of residency in November and we re-did the bathroom. While I LOVE it, it will most likely be our first and last DIY home project simply because I think vacations will need to be spent relaxing, not working. (Not to mention we don't have any money to do any more renovations).

I'm pretty proud of DH - he did such a great job... who knew?

Anyways here are some before and after pictures.

Love it!!! How did they do the floor? Did they have to remove the old tile? I so want to redo my bathrooms, they have very old, very yucky tile!

Wow - that is one heck of a before and after. I'm also curious about the tile floor. I think that's my next project, and I'm kind of hoping you'll say you just went right over the old tile.

The tile was a PITA, or at least the hardest part. I'll explain the process later when I'm on a computer instead of my phone.

Yes they removed the old tile. They ripped up the tile and then part of the subfloor. Some of the subfloor needed to be replaced from an old leak (that was found during closing). So they had to cut up part of that wood subfloor and put down some new stuff. Then they laid something called durarock down. Then they laid the tile. We rented a tile saw to cut the tile. The flooring took the longest because it had to be done in stages. We tore up the floor one day, repaired the subfloor another day, cut and laid the durarock another day, then cut and laid the tiles (and they had to sit for 24 hours) and then finally he caulked the floor. I'm sure it would be quicker the second time around, now that DH knows what he is doing, but I also know that our other bathroom is odd shapped with several doors and closets, so I think maybe we'll have a contractor do it if we ever get around to it.

We did the job fairly inexpensively, and I would have been open to putting laminate over the tile, but I guess that can't be done. I was all about keeping it as simple and as cheap as possible!
