  • Damn front loader!!!

Seriously, as far as I can tell, front loaders are pieces of crap. DO NOT waste your money. Problem number one, they cost a crap load of money and in return you get to buy more expensive detergent and then when you run a cycle your clothes become a twisted mess that you have to untangle and shake out before you put them in the dryer. Also what comes with your purchase is expensive repairs. If you do some research you will discover that all front loaders, no matter what brand, will have it's initial repair somewhere between 4 and 5 years of age. The estimated cost of repair is $500. The same cost of an old fashioned Kenmore (or other brand) that will not need a repair for 10 or more years. Yes, ours is broke, and it currently has an entire load stuck in it and the repairman cannot come out until next week.

Gah, that SUCKS, Tara. And I'd imagine with 5 kiddos, yours probably gets a lot of use!

We "inherited" the front loader when we bought this house, so far it hasn't given me too many problems but I'm not sure exactly how old it is.

      Ugh, so frustrating!!!

I just read somewhere that most new ( maybe energy star) washing machines are as energy efficient as front loaders. I think we will avoid them once our old girl calls it quits.

I am also clearly the mom of two young boys, because when I saw the title of this post I thought you were referring to the heavy equipment/construction vehicle-type front loader.

          Tara,

I'm so sorry that you are going through this, BUT thanks so much for the heads up. We felt like we should buy a front loader w/d set to keep the same level of quality of appliances throughout the house. Fortunately, better financial sense prevailed and we are just using our old standard set until they crap out. (Have I ever mentioned I'm CHEAP!) I just couldn't convince myself that I would get an extra $1000 laundry benefit for the higher end w/d. I also didn't like that we had to buy $200 stands to set them on in addition to the higher price for a set. Now I can just say that the standard version just makes better sense.

I learn a lot hanging out around here.

I've been seeing a shift away from front loaders and many new, high-efficiency top loaders. We are happy with our top load, I think it gets our diapers cleaner.

When the old top loader crapped out here, right after we moved in, they replaced it with a top loader that functions like a front loader. I HATE it. I don't think it makes a significant difference in the way the clothes get cleaned and my diapers wore out VERY quickly. So much for it being gentler on clothes. And I can't felt my knitted items in it.

Wait, so Tara - what are you supposed to do about the load that is in there? Can you manually get them out?

Tara that sucks big time! So sorry!

Front loaders & HE top loaders + big families = SUCK.

Old fashioned, extra large capacity, fill with water machines w/an agitator that you can cchose level of agitation are waaaaay better IMH(but experienced)O!

I think I will look into a commercial grade machine if when we move & I get my dream laundry(mat) err um room.

Yuck. We have the HE top loader, and I love it. I love it so much that when we moved and the buyers negotiated to keep it, I bought the same one over again. My clothes are noticeably cleaner and I'm able to wash so much more at once (a must with 3 kids, IMO). We were really scared off the front loaders for a variety of reasons, but I will swear by my machine.

I love my frontloader, but have heard of so many others having problems. FWIW, I refused to buy those bases. I plop my tuchas down on the floor and move stuff from one to the other.
