  • Couch Damage Help

So the cost of moving yourself keeps going up! We have found a few pieces of damaged furniture, its our own fault the way we packed the truck.

Anyway, one needs to be fixed. There is a hole about the size of two quarters side by side on the arm of one of our couches where the fabric tore/was shredded. Its very obvious, just stitching it won't fix it. I need a fashionable way to cover it which probably means doing the same on the other arm. Its right at the front of the arm.

    Suggestions???

Couch arm covers? I grew up with them being standard on couches. They cover the top & part of the sides & front of the couch. If you can't find any if you know someone who sews, they should be easy to make. You would just want to pick out some upholstery fabric that looks nice with your couch.

What's your budget? Can you swing a high-end slipcover?

A slipcover might not be a bad idea because the more I look at it in this room the less I like it but it is where it is for the year. The walls are taupe, DH's brown leather chair sits next to it and it is a beige/brown.

Hmm... sounds like you can go anywhere with all the neutrals! Maybe try a neutral slip cover and some bright or patterned pillows.

Honestly, whatever you do I wouldn't spend much. Moving is hell on furniture and we have very little that has survived the last four moves. I'd do something on the cheap and let it go since you plan to move again soon.

That is also a good point Kelly because I've had this couch since before we were married - which means more then 9 years - and it will be the first piece to go when we get done with training!

Just parted with a 40 yo sofa here. I'm a freak! BTW, my sofa had arm covers.

We have slip covers on all the furniture downstairs because the kids have trashed them. Construction/structure is fine, just the fabric is thrashed. So we bough some decent, stretchy covers and they look surprisingly nice.

I'd either put a nice throw over the hole or just ignore it for the next year. The latter is probably the most likely though .

The suggestions are good, so I won't add. Just sending hugs - it's frustrating when you try your best and something still gets damaged.

Ours is slip-covered. I got it from Penneys and it's the stretchy kind that's like spanx for your couch. Not perfect but way better than the horror that's under the slipcover.

If you're going to go the slip-cover route, make sure to check around on the prices. When I was looking I found the same covers could be $100+ difference, depending on the store. Surprisingly, Bed Bath & Beyond had the the cheapest prices in town.

Another thought is IKEA. Slipcovers can be good, but they can also be a major PITA that drive you crazy. There are serious deals to be had on the cheap in the as-is room at IKEA. I got a blue & white striped couch (in the 90's when that was a good thing) in the as-is for $300. It survived a decade w/me, and is still w/a friend.
