      Exterminator: traps only, no poison.
If they die and you can't find them, it's very unsanitary and smelly.
A good pest control specialist will check for points of entry and sweep traps until they are gone and no new signs are showing up.

Yes check your lease to see who is responsible but notify your landlord anyway. We were responsible in ours but our landlord had a standing contract with terminex to deal with that sort of stuff so we didn't pay anyway

Maybe I'm crazy, but mice don't bother me nearly as much as bugs! I just use live traps and release them far far away if I ever have a problem.

This is your landlord's responsibility. Urgh - so miserable. But absolutely correct, if they die in the walls of fumes or something...the smell is horrific.

MrsK, we were responsible in our lease as well. But the landlord did offer to split the cost with us after I complained enough. We trapped 4 or 5, but they still had access to the house. If they are only in the garage, I think you are better off just getting your own traps from the store. Get the ones that kill the mouse (snap traps), otherwise you have to worry about relocating the mouse far enough away that it's not just going to get back in the garage. In my research, they say a mouse can enter a hole the size of a pencil eraser...so close any holes you find. Holes are supposed to be closed with metal because they can chew through everything else...plastic, drywall, GreatStuff foam. However we closed most holes with whatever we had around and checked for signs of chew. Ultimately we were unable to keep them out and I left. But once the temps warmed up, Russ didn't see them anymore.

We had to throw a lot of stuff out that the rats and mice nested in and pooped all over. I cleaned as much as I could before I left, but we ended up having to chuck a lot.

Pecans worked GREAT as bait. Just shell it and crack it up a bit so it's in smaller pieces. Peanut butter was a second choice bait. The old redneck exterminator dude was the one who baited them with pecans. I was very doubtful, but it worked. We did have both rats and mice.
