  • What color?

    Would you paint this bathroom?

The wallpaper has to go. It is the master bath off of this bedroom.

I'm thinking like a taupe or something similar, I'm not sure the master will stay yellow. It probably will for now but we may change it down the road.

We plan to paint A's room.

It needs to be less orange and more pink.

I'm not sure what to do with R's room either. I hate to spend a lot of money on it when he'll probably want to do his own thing in a couple of years but its to much green.

We plan to hire someone to have this painting done the week before we move in, we close on the 6th and don't move in until probably the 18th-ish. Luckily we don't have to paint anything but I'd like to have these 3 rooms done.

Any and all suggestions are welcome, interior design is NOT my strong suit.

Get some sample cans and brush a few large swatches on each wall in the room you're going to paint. Make sure to look at it at several different times during the day and night to get a good idea how it will look when you have it up.

Colors are relative to not only different light sources, but also what other colors are next to them. You can take a beige and put it in a room with dark wood trim and furniture and you'd swear it was just a soft off-white.

Whatever you choose, don't base your selection off of the paint chips that you pick up at the paint store/department. Ink on paper looks nothing like paint on a wall.

Full disclosure: I was a coatings consultant prior to DH going to med school. Let me know if you have any questions.

I can't see the floor tile that well, but I think that a soft grayish color would look great in the bathroom.

As much natural light as you have in that bathroom, you could even get away with a more saturated or darker color than what is presently there.

eh, actually I just logged in on my computer and the pic is a little bigger. There might be a little more brown in the tile than I thought. I was thinking it would look a little closer to this: http://www.houzz.com/photos/159612/A...hroom-dc-metro

Although I like this bath and it is painted a grayish tone and the tiles look to have a lot more brown in them than yours. http://www.houzz.com/photos/88435/Es...m-other-metros

I think if you go the taupe route, you should go a little dark. Our whole house is painted in a light taupe and I can't stand it - it's just very blah (the issue could be more that whole house is one color!). But I like the way this bathroom looks: http://www.houzz.com/photos/119348/M...throom-seattle

Ooh, yes I like that last houzz link. I'll have to look on there for some more ideas.

I want this painted before we move in. We close on the 6th and will have almost 2 weeks before we move in so I want the painting done before we get there. I know that is a risk but I don't want to have to deal with painting with two little ones running around and DH starting his new job. I know if we don't have it done before we move in it won't get done!

Do your kids have bedding they plan on keeping or new bedding/fabrics already picked out? what about for the master?

With the pink... I'd be careful not to go very dark at all. If she wants pink bedding it could clash pretty easily if it's anything other than very pale. (i shared an almost hot pink bathroom with my sister growing up - crazy lilly pulitzer phase- horrible!!). My room was a very pale lavender and has been the only kids room that my parents didn't have to repaint.

There were some super cute kids rooms on that houzz site too. And it's awesome that some of the posts tag the paint color!!

The bathroom is so light and white - I'd do something fairly dark, and then a much lighter shade of the same color in the master. I would maybe go bedding shopping first (take advantage of that free sales tax) and coordinate from there. For A's room - I think Potterybarn teen sometimes has some really great bedding for young girls if you don't want to be "themy."

I think A probably wants to keep her princess bedding she got when we moved here but I'll have to ask her.

I agree. I'm embarrassed about the amount if time i spent looking at furniture for the house we are in now (and we're only here for 16 months!). My mom has always hired someone just to pick out wall colors (which I always thought was nuts, but it is kind of tricky!!). You could just grab one of those color wheels from a Benjamin Moore store... The paint won't actually look that color on the walls, but it would probably be a huge time saver!!

I love house stuff... And have a decent amount of free time. I'm sure I'll waste more time on houzz later and send you some more links

I would also suggest going with a deeper color in the bathroom. It's hard for me to see what color the tiles on the floor are, so it's hard to suggest either grays or browns. For A's room, I wouldn't do all pink. Break it up with another color (lavender, white, yellow, light green). You can either do that through stripes or do a chair rail and separate colors that way. For R's room, I would also do at least two colors.
