  • Books on home improvement?

I'm in the mood to do some DIY work around the house. We have maintenance that needs kept up (caulk repair, etc.) and I want to touch up paint and install shelving and that sort of thing. With no experience and no HGTV, I need some resources. I like learning new things from books, so does anyone have a recommendation of a really solid how-to manual? I prefer a print reference, but a really solid reliable website would be fine too. Anything has to be better than googling for "how to repaint a dresser" or "how to install linoleum" or "routine maintenance on tile grout" or whatever comes to mind.

When I bought this house, my dad gifted me a set of Time Life books from the 80's on every conceivable DIY home maintenance project. I have yet to really use them though because codes and the available products have changed since they were published. I just google and have been pretty successful so far.

Otherwise, I try to corner the old guy working at Ace or the hardware store. They always seem to know a ton and are thrilled to expound to a female audience.

Yeah, I have a handful of those types of books from the 70s and 80s too. I found them...less than helpful. Unless I want to install faux paneling on the walls. I just feel like so much of a dummy on this stuff.

Maybe I'll go to the hardware store and flip through the books on their shelves.

Last time I was in Home Depot they had a book they published that looked really informative. I have a lot of "Creative Homeowner" books that are super helpful. I'm not sure if they publish a comprehensive one or not.

Ooh, so far I love it too!

BonBon, I have the Creative Homeowner Kids' Rooms book, I think my SIL the designer gave it to me. I should pull that one out too. Thanks!!
