  • Servicing Vacuum Cleaner?

My vacuum cleaner just isn't working right, and it kind of smells funny when I run it. I've cleaned all the parts I know how to reach. I really like this one, but I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to take to a repair place or just replace it. I think I paid a little over $100 for it about 2 years ago. There's a refurbished Dyson DC25 on Woot.com today for $250 (it's $560 new on Amazon). Thoughts? I don't want to pay for a repair if it's going to cost more than $50, but if it just needs to be cleaned, I'd be thrilled to get a couple more years out of it. I've been really happy with it until the past few weeks.

Guess I would call around and get estimates. Some places might look at it and give you an estimate for free before commiting.

My miele canister vac was around $200 and I've had it for almost six years with no issues. I did purchase the carpet attachment for $100 last year.

Is there any string or hair wrapped around the rotation thingy (so technical) and did you check the belt?

A couple days ago I had to replace the belt on our Symmetry. It only cost $8 and took me about 15 minutes. It runs like new again. I'd check that first.

@ST - The thing with the spinning brushes is called the agitator.

Yeah, with my long hair, I clean the rotation thing a lot (haha I don't know what it's called either). I don't know how to check any belts. I'm not very technical!

I think I'll try to find a manual online and see if I can check the belt.

            The more you know...

I say the belt too because J had to replace the belt on ours not too long and it smelled funny too. Make B do it!

Huh. I'd always heard it referred to as a "beater bar" (we're talking about the rotating brush part, right?) http://www.bealsvacuum.com/Whatisava...beaterbar.aspx

I think you can use the terms interchangeably.

Laurie, there should be several screws either on the top of the hood, or underside, that will allow you to "remove" the plastic surrounding the head and belt.
Sometimes, things get caught in the belt and make the smell. Other times, the belt is damaged and dying slowly (resulting in the smell).
