  • 2nd Refrigerator vs Upright Freezer

So we had pretty much decided that we were getting an upright freezer, which one, where we are going to put it, etc. etc. Then we had R's birthday party on Saturday which we hosted and only for 10 adults and 5 children. I needed another refrigerator AND freezer and that was a SMALL party.

It looks like it will be at least a year before we are able to even think about starting a remodel for the kitchen. When we do we plan to put in at least one refrigerated drawer in addition to the refrigerator. But I'm wondering if we should buy a cheaper refrigerator/freezer in the mean time to go in the garage...

This is the freezer we had picked out, nothing fancy.

What I'd really like is your traditional top freezer refrigerator except have the top part (ie small part) be the refrigerator and the big part be the freezer but those don't seem to exist...

    Thoughts?!?!?!

I'm no help. I have both, and they're both full. THe freezer is in the garage, and the refrigerator/freezer is in the laundry room.

I'm also no help, but tell me more about having a fridge or a freezer in the garage. Is it an insulated and/or air conditioned garage? I'm desperate for another freezer, but we could only put it in the garage, and I'd heard that it can turn itself off depending on the ambient temperature.

We have a second frig that gets much more use than a freezer only would get. I especially love to fill it with water bottles/juice/Gatorade in the summer

Hmm...maybe a 2nd fridge is the way to go then...of course that is more expensive.

Cristina, we've always had our freezer in the garage, both in Portland and in Minnesota - they've worked find as long as you get a manual defrost. My understanding is you can't put an automatic defrost outside the heated/temp regulated part of your house.

So that is another question, can I put a refrigerator in the garage? I'm guessing no...

I've had a fridge in the garage before and my freezer is frostless. I've never heard of problems like you're describing. I live in FL!

My guess that its not an issue in FL, my understanding was the cold in MN could ruin a frostless.

I'm pretty much in the dark here. I'm thinking it's not a problem in Florida, other than the increased costs to run because of the heat.

From my limited reading, the freezer thermostat supposedly reads the colder temperatures in the garage during the winter, and the freezer ends up not running enough to maintain the correct temperature for foods to stay frozen. But this is all based on online reading. I don't know anyone who's experienced this. Can anyone tell me otherwise? Am I worried for nothing?

We had or freezer in our garage when we lived in norther IN and never had any problems.

My sister has a full-sized fridge in her garage and they use it all the time for drinks, and freezing her boyfriend's catches of the day.

Yes, this. I put back up milk, perishable snacks...you name it in the second fridge. I use it ALL the time.

For entertaining a freezer is useless other than for ice.

I think you guys have convinced us a fridge is better - thanks! Lowe's and HD currently have some really good deals.

If its a temporary solution, why not go cheap and get one via craislist

No its not really temporary, even when we re-do the kitchen we'll still use it.

My parents always had a second fridge and an upright freezer in the garage and the fridge always seemed to be more useful. It was great during the holidays.

We live in the Midwest and have an upright freezer in the garage that we don't have to defrost and we haven't had any problems. We originally got it because we were running out of room to store pumped milk, but now I do a lot of freezer meals so it's nice to have the extra space.
