Which is better for trim? Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore? Is there a big difference?

Oh, good! I'm so glad you went to SW and talked to the paint counter peeps. I'm sure they pointed you in the right direction.

All paint manufacturers make high, middle, and low end products. Both SW and BM make excellent products. I personally prefer SW, but that doesn't mean BM is inferior. They both make good coatings, I just like working with SW products more than BM ones.

I don't know much about BM, but for whatever reason we always get SW paint. Make sure you set up an account (it's free), because you get 10% off all of your purchases, they keep track of everything for you, and they'll send you coupons occasionally.

Slightly related - we've got 3 chairs painted black and 3 to go. My mom's doing that part because I don't feel comfortable using the spray paint while pregnant, even with a mask. And our kitchen table has a couple of coats of stain on it. She's supposed to swap out the chairs that she has and finish the other 3, and maybe put more coats of paint on the table today.

We went to the SW store today and I really liked the customer service. The guy basically said the same as DD, with the exception of saying he thought shellac primer was overkill (smile, nod, buy shellac anyway) but he tried to tell us oil-based paint might work better...I was really hoping to use latex. They're having a sale in a week, so we didn't buy today.

Truthfully, I prefer using oil-based paints on furniture and cabinets. Yes, it's smellier and a little messier to clean up, but nothing dries as hard or is as durable for interior trim/doors/cabinets. It was out of favor for a long time because it yellows as it ages and most people wanted white trim and doors.

Agree - oil-based is definitely better for furniture and cabinets, it's just more of a pain. We're too lazy to do it, plus I don't want to while pregnant.

We're going cream-ish, how badly does it yellow?

In areas with little sunlight, it's pretty noticeable. Enough that you'd have to get custom matched paint to attempt touch ups later. It still yellows in areas with more sun, but far less.

Dark, north facing kitchen w/very very little sunlight. Hence the light paint to brighten it up.
