    I never got around to posting pics of ours but sounds like you figured it out. We use a metal ice bucket we found at TJMaxx for like $10. It has a lid and we empty it daily. I couldn't deal with an open container on my counter (fruit flies blech!).

      Ice bucket sounds like a good idea. I was also thinking of a small milking pail. With the bowl I have been placing a paper towel over it and its keeping the fruit flies down. I'm thinking of using a rubber band as well so the sides are tight. Hey, if I get motivated enough I might even make some rudimentary cloth caps for it.
