  • Deep Cleaning Tile Floor/Grout

    Suggestions on methods/products?

We've been in this house for 20 months and I guess I've never really looked at the floor in DH's closet, probably because you usually can't see it. But yesterday I got a glimpse of it (its in the master bath) and realized how FILTHY our bathroom floor/tile is. I even went back and looked at the original listing pictures, it even looks like that in them. The floor in the closet is beautiful compared to what we have now.

So I'm determined to at least attempt to clean it back to its original color. I have no idea where to start.

    Ideas/Suggestions/BTDT?

    Thanks!

Maybe a bleach pen? They make them for grout. There is also this grout renew/sealer stuff that my mom has used and works great

If bleach isn't your bag, try a baking soda/vinegar compound application, and let it sit.

Call a tile company and have them come out and clean/seal it! Cleaning grout is a huge huge huge PITA. It's not my favorite form of cleaning (small, intricate, tedious).

We used some gel grout cleaner once that was awesome. You squeezed it in lines and let it sit. I'm sure it was mostly bleach. I've also had luck with magic erasers and elbow grease. Or...regrouting. Honestly, my remodeling skills beat my housekeeping!

Last time I did that, it was armed with the bleach grout cleaner and a toothbrush. It was tedious as hell.

Is your grout white? Ours is filthy, but tan. I am concerned about using bleach on it.

Yes it's supposed to be white, now it's a grey. Looking at it again tonight I really am appalled at how dirty the floor is, not just the grout but the tile too. I may try one cleaner an/or bleach and if that doesn't make a difference we'll probably hire someone.

It will be faaaar easier to call a company that does grout cleaning and staining BUT if you insist on DIY sprinkle baking soda in grout then spray with white vinegar. Let sit for five minutes then scrub with a toothbrush and rinse with water. Repeat until you achieve desired results or reach the point of diminishing returns. But really, it's pretty cheap to have done.

Oh, once you clean realize that you will have stripped away any sealant that was on the grout so you will want to reseal it otherwise it will just get dirty again very quickly.

Yes, much easier, since this is the master bath which is HUGE!

Does anyone have an idea how much professional grout cleaning costs? The grout in my shower is DISGUSTING and I feel like I've tried everything short of re-grouting to make it better. Maybe it's time to call in the pros.

FWIW, the bleach pen has worked better than anything else I've tried so far. It's also the easiest option, since you just draw it on and rinse it off.

Other than a professional cleaning and reselling you can also get the DIY kits at hardware stores where you essentially restain/paint the grout. A friend was very happy with it and it was cheap.

I used one of those kits to paint the ground on my vanity, and I was only so-so about the results. It's a vast improvement and it's cheap, but only 6 months later I'm starting to notice little chips here and there, and I can see some of the discolored grout below.

We paid around $650 for complete cleaning and sealing of all grout in three full baths plus grout and tile repair work. There was a lot of grout because the tiles were penny rounds in two baths. They also used a natural product so I could be in the house with the children. Some companies use pretty toxic stuff so check on that.
