I'm looking to replace our "fleet" and I know we have some fire-expertise around here, so...is there anything I should look for? Otherwise I'll get whatever is reasonably-priced.

Have you checked out Consumer Reports to see if they have any recs?

If you have some money to throw at this, I've been drooling over the nest ones: https://nest.com/smoke-co-alarm/life-with-nest-protect/

Our fire dept insists on the optical smoke alarms. They claim there are fewer false alarms and they are more accurate. We have a mix of both, hard-wired with battery backups. Deb? (Her DH is pretty plugged in with the fire departments!)

Consumer Reports actually doesn't recommend the combo ones so when we moved to this house we bought separate.

            These are CR's recs: (CO)

            (Smoke)

When we moved in here we had ADT come in and hardwire a fire and CO detectors. Not sure what kind they are but it's nice having everything monitored.

Photo electric work much, much faster than ionized (which is what probably 90 percent of people have). Like several minutes. Even for those who feel up to date should really think about upgrading.

ADT's are photoelectric and holy crap, they work crazy fast. Like when we open the door to the walk in attic the alarm will be set off if the door is not closed quickly because tiny particles of dust come out and alert the detector.

Good to know - we put in new CO detectors when we moved in but should really upgrade the smoke alarms, though we do have one tied to our alarm system, I don't know which kind it is...

That thermostat looks amazing too!!! I wonder if I could install it in a rental.... We currently have the worlds most annoying thermostat (one of the ones that you need to program 4 different temps for each day of the week. Seemed kind of cool at first... It's not). Hmmmm.

                      Off topic, sorry!

We have the thermostat, and we're in a rental. Take the faceplate off your current one and look at what wires you have and read the compatibility guide on the nest website. As long as that says it'll work, and you have wifi, you're golden. Just don't forget to switch the thermostat back when you move out!

We love our Nest thermostat, but we really can't afford the nest protect too (the fact that it turns off the furnace when it detects CO is awesome though). Thank you everyone!!
