I'm looking to replace our "fleet" and I know we have some fire-expertise around here, so...is there anything I should look for? Otherwise I'll get whatever is reasonably-priced.

Our fire dept insists on the optical smoke alarms. They claim there are fewer false alarms and they are more accurate. We have a mix of both, hard-wired with battery backups. Deb? (Her DH is pretty plugged in with the fire departments!)Angie

When we moved in here we had ADT come in and hardwire a fire and CO detectors. Not sure what kind they are but it's nice having everything monitored.Tara

Photo electric work much, much faster than ionized (which is what probably 90 percent of people have). Like several minutes. Even for those who feel up to date should really think about upgrading.

ADT's are photoelectric and holy crap, they work crazy fast. Like when we open the door to the walk in attic the alarm will be set off if the door is not closed quickly because tiny particles of dust come out and alert the detector.Tara

Take the faceplate off your current one and look at what wires you have and read the compatibility guide on the nest website. As long as that says it'll work, and you have wifi, you're golden. Just don't forget to switch the thermostat back when you move out!
