  • Curb appeal & sun room demolition??

We are in escrow to buy a house in our new location! Keeping our fingers crossed that all goes through -- the house appraised just fine, and we should be able to close on March 10.

We are happy because it's in the neighborhood we wanted, and it's a modest 1960's home that will suit us for a few years while we decide if we like the job/location. Our longer term plan is to build a house on a lot that we've already purchased in the town. We wanted to rent something, but the rental market stinks in this town, so we decided to buy something instead. That's the back story

I need help with some inexpensive ideas to help with curb appeal. We really don't like the current front door, so we'd like to replace that. Maybe with a pop of color (muted red maybe?). The house is white with black shutters. I'll try to include some pics.

Also, there are two sunrooms (3 season rooms, but fully enclosed with glass, so a step up from a screened in porch). The one off the back of the garage is bigger and I think we'll keep that one. But, the other one was added to house a hot tub (which has been removed). We really don't have a need for it, and it's right in the middle of the backyard. I feel like we'd rather have a nice outdoor patio. That way, the whole yard is visible, and we can watch the kids while they are playing. Keeping one sunroom, would we be hurting property value by removing the other one? I still have to check to see if they removed siding on the exterior when they put it up -- I'm really not sure how big of a job it would be at this point. Anyway, just looking for some other opinions as DH and I just keep going around in circles with our same thoughts over and over We probably won't tackle this project right away because we have lots of other stuff to do inside.

Is that little thing that sticks out in the back the ons you'd like to demo? I agree, do it. Put in a nice brick patio for your grill.

Cute house! I'd get rid of one of the sunrooms, too. They did a similar project on Young House Love a couple months ago if you're looking for dome inspiration.

Yes, it's the smaller one directly out the back that we'd get rid of. I'm glad to know that we aren't off base with our thoughts on that. I'm just hoping it's a relatively straightforward job. We want to spruce the place up (previous owners were older so lots of dated decor), but we don't want to spend a lot since we are saving up to build.

Are you on Pinterest? Lots of great ideas for cheap sprucing up of spaces. And Houzz, of course, for ideas for when you build.

            Congrats!! So exciting.

I'm not too active on Pinterest, but perhaps I should give it another try for some ideas. Houzz is my main site for inspiration. In fact, I'm so much more excited to build our dream house, and really I just want to do the bare minimum to get this house up to par.

Congratulations! Would a patio (to replace the sunroom) get lots of direct sunlight? I always think patios should go where you get a lot of sun, but that's maybe my PNW perspective...
