Cable Modem

Do you rent yours from your internet provider? Ours is $8 a month, so I'm thinking we should have bought our own a long time ago. Plus, I'm having lag issues in the game I play, and I'm wondering if it might help to get a higher end one. Is it complicated to set up your own modem? Do they let you do that, or do you have to use theirs? I know, I probably just need to call them, but I don't want to sound like an idiot.

We used to use our own, but it got old and around the same time we switched providers and got a deal where they're not charging us to rent the modem. So now we have one from the cable company. I would still prefer to be using our own, if it wasn't currently free, because I think it tended to be faster than whatever old model they're handing out. Probably depends on the company and area. All we had to do was get the modem all set up and plugged in, and then call the cable company and give them the right numbers.

We looked into buying our own at one point because we were tired of paying for it, but ended up switching companies to one that we got for free (just required a deposit that we got back when we moved). I don't know anything about setting them up though.

Thanks! I figure they just have us whatever modem they had, so it's probably not top of the line. I went to Cnet, and I found one for my wish list...
