I'm really terrible at keeping contained plants of any sort alive. I have a hard time watering them - either too much or not enough. For some reason though, I do really well with them in the ground.

I started my herbs last weekend. For basil and cilantro, I do a very haphazard "fill a large pot with dirt, scatter seed packet, sprinkle more dirt, water, wait". It works great. I have a lot of sprouts already. I collect the cilantro seeds at the end of each growth cycle and haven't had to buy any for 3 years. For mint, lavender, and rosemary I bought started plants at Home Depot and put each in its own pot. I usually get a very large basil and mint harvest (depending on pot size). I've had more trouble keeping rosemary and lavender alive, which is why I started with plants instead of seeds this year. I'd love to take those ones inside for the winter and keep them going. Other than potting and watering them, I don't do anything. They all live on the back deck, which is mostly sunny with some shade from the railings. If it takes more work than that, I'm not interested!Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.
