  • Fencing a yard

I am contemplating fencing the backyard at our new house. Neighbors on both sides have fenced theirs, and the back is partially fenced via a neighbor. The problem is that on one side, the neighbors' fence does not come to the edge of the property line. Does anyone have any experience with this? (I wonder if they mow the lawn outside the fence... I'm not sure how much space is between their fence and the property line). Obviously, we'd need to talk to our neighbors, but since we aren't in town yet, I'm limited to just contemplating in my own mind

DS will be 2 in June, and he is a wanderer. I'm really worried that spending time in the backyard won't be nice and relaxing and fun like it is in our currently fenced backyard, but rather stressful and annoying as he tries to wander to the other yards via the portion in the back that isn't fenced. He just doesn't "get it" yet.

Are there any required permits for fencing in your area?

I just looked it up. It is required to have a building permit to install the fence, but there are very few guidelines listed. Basically, the height cannot exceed 72". I don't think we'll be able to really tell much until we go there again. I have this feeling that if we decide to fence it in, there will be 3 feet between our fence (on our property line) and the neighbor's fence...
