Do you have enough smoke detectors in your house?

    http://abcnews.go.com/Business/quiz-...ry?id=23661553

If you saw my post yesterday our neighbors had a "small" house fire yesterday. After all was said and done they think it was an arc caused when we had a power surge about 3am yesterday. It went from their fuse panel to a pile of suitcases they had piled nearby and wrapped in plastic, they think that burned for several hours before it got hot enough that it melted a plastic water line nearby which put the fire out and caused the smoke which then set off their smoke detectors. They had one smoke detector on that level which is the local/state reg because there is no bedroom on that floor. Their entire basement is trashed, the unfinished space is totally burned and the finished space is probably also going to have to be gutted because of smoke damage. They are planning to sell this house in the spring because they are moving in the winter to a house they are building.

When we get home from vacation we will be adding two more smoke detectors to our basement and two window fire ladders to the upstairs. So very very scary.

Mine are all dying (not the batteries, but the actual detectors) at the same time. They are good for about seven years and apparently they were all installed at the same time. I need to order some in bulk. THanks for the reminder

I didn't know that! Ours are 5 years old.

SS, that's very scary! I'm glad they're okay.

          Fire Safety

We had to put new detectors in our residency house, one day they all just went off and when the fire department came out they told us they were expired. I didn't know they expired either but now that you say that I'm pretty sure we have at least one we'll need to replace as well as the two we're adding.
