I'm sure it isn't something you're in the mood to do, but I wonder if you could call a bunch of plumbing companies and find out if they have ever done any work at your house. Would be nice if you could show that the sellers knew there was an issue.

I'm sure that would take forever, and then you'd have to get a lawyer etc. But if your insurance doesn't cover it... 20K is A LOT of cash.

The company we have just happened to be the one that used to service the house (thank god!) -- they have a file that spans 20 years on it.
Last service was in 2002 - the house was then purchased in 2004 by people who had like 3 liens on it and did jack. Then the back possessed it, and an investment company bought it/flipped it. They redid everything correctly EXCEPT the plumbing (which they smartly didn't touch). I have a hard time believing they knew about it, since even they didn't know where the clean out was (and it was buried underground).

Unfortunately, it's just the nature of the pipes and not necessarily a care issue.
The pipes in this area are all cast iron, and are susceptible to corrosion (we live near the ocean) over time.

The house was built in 1965 -- it's just time to have it done, and we got caught holding the turd.

By using a jet and camera, they have successfully flushed a ton of corroded metal and debris (so.much.metal) out of the line.

I have been told it has bought us about 6 months of time, but not to push it.

This means we have time to find a trusted GC/plumber to do the job, rather than haphazardly choosing someone in an emergency situation. For that alone, I am grateful.
However, if a pipe just bursts due to flimsiness in structure, they can't foresee that. Additionally, there's a crack in the bottom (bad sign), so sediment will find its way in.

He came home at lunch. I told him, and the two work crews showed him what's going on.

(I already called my Mom and ugly cried -- I'm feeling better, but the price still hurts).

                OMG.

I realize you are probably stuck, but this stuff started happening the week you moved in, right? That really seems suspicious.

But I know how bank owned stuff goes. You likely signed your life away with the paperwork. We did.

The week after we moved in - that Saturday is when it backed up.

Oh yeah, if it was bank owner, you're probably not going to get anything from them.

Plus, since you've already talked to the plumber that did most of the work there, there probably isn't anything else to find out.

I'm sorry. What about your homeowners?

Just kidding - the pipe to the city's clean out is broken...

We have a few months if that.

There are some warranty companies that are made specifically for this type of thing. There is a 30 day wait once you buy in though. Homeserve maybe?

I'm sorry! It seems shitty that they flipped but didn't change the pipes. They had the walls open. It's common to do. My guess they knew it was major and ignored it. I'm sorry. Hugs.

So I spoke to the friend I know that had this happen. Homeowners wouldn't pay. She should have had a separate policy. It was $124K. Insane, but they didn't just buy the house... It's really really wrong and totally unfair in your case.

Sewage is a separate clause, not covered in our current policy.

I have someone coming out to run an estimate to replace the main line through the house and the main line to the city sewer only. For now.

Just hugs. I'm so sorry. What a nightmare! We had a $10k repair in residency, and it just sucks. I'd see about getting a loan to cover it if the plumber doesn't set up payment plans.
