Here is our cluttered front door:

We don't have a front closet, so that big tall mess is our coat tree. On the left is a new bench that we got with shelves/drawers for shoes/hats/gloves. On the right is a decorative shelf that has served as a resting place for shoes for a long time.

    Here:
DSCN9641.jpg This is the new bench
    DSCN9642.jpgThis is the old cabinet

So I have a design dilemma .... I'm looking for ideas.

My thought is to take the old cabinet and put it in the laundry room entryway where there is currently nothing. I would hang the black sign above it (that is currently sitting on the old bench). Then I would put the new bench where the old cabinet is. Finally, I would hang up coat hooks on the side where the new bench is currently sitting and get rid of the coat rack.

    Any thoughts? ideas? help!

Definitely get rid of the coat rack and put up some hooks over the bench for coats and backpacks. That alone could help organize a lot of the chaos.

Oh, and I would consider switching the bench over where the cabinet is currently located. There's more room on the right side of the door for people and stuff. Shoving too many things into a smaller area makes it appear more cluttered.

Cabinet to another room is a good choice, too.

You definitely need something more spread out for the coats and something to contain the bags/backpacks - if people go in and out through the laundry more, that would be a better place for it. If they use this door and need coats and bags and shoes here regularly, then I'm not sure what the best solution would be. If people are putting on and taking off shoes there, there needs to be seating and shoe storage both.

I would suggest one wall (the one by the stairs) to be designated for adults with 3 double hooks and the opposite wall for kids, with (at least) a double hook clearly labeled for each child.
