I love long, dramatic dining tables. They want to make you pull up a chair and join the conversation. I got this one when it was on sale this summer. Love it! I just have an assortment of chairs right now. I want some custom upholstered chairs but that's going to be an even bigger investment, but darn it there's a table for everyone to sit at . With the four counter bar stools I cans eat up to 16 before I need to start breaking out the card tables.

I was just going to mention how the chairs are the real issue in terms of $$$$$$. I bought five of these (

when they were on an awesome sale, plus one of those great coupons PB sends every time we move, and then another bunch of gift cards from wedding registry returns. But to make up for the missing chairs, we did a bench - which was way cheaper. I don't envision the table lasting forever since it's pine, but hopefully we will be able to keep (and add to) the chairs later.

I love those chairs. Sigh. I need to purchase 12 chairs. Eek!

I was also going to mention the 15% coupons you get when you move and change your address. I got PB, west elm and target! If you use that on a sale item it really helps.

I don't know if we will get many coupons. Our mailing address won't change.

It might be worth contacting them if you are interested in coupons. I bet if you explain that you are actually moving and interested in furnishing your new home they'd be happy to take your money. Maybe showing a change in utilities? Just a thought.

Have you been to IKEA? I was actually very impressed with their upholstered chairs. We're looking at some for our breakfast nook.

Here's the dining set we bought three months after we moved in, in time to host our first Thanksgiving. It extends with a leaf in the center of the table, and these days we keep the leaf in full-time.

I exchanged emails with this guy's wife. He's a firefighter who does carpentry on the side. He makes the table tops out of Douglas Fir (pine) and the legs are "paint grade". He probably gets the legs ready made and doesn't turn them himself. She says the wood costs him $250 and he charges $300 for the labor. I asked her if he could work with hardwoods if we provided the wood. She was going to check with him but I haven't heard back.

I'm thinking of buying some reclaimed wood myself. I really like this: http://vintagereclaimedlumber.com/gallery/ It's wood from old 1920s/1930s boxcars. But, at nearly $200/plank, I'd be spending about $1k just on wood for the tabletop. Still, if I do that and pay a carpenter to build it, it would be about half of the retail cost and I would be able to specify exactly what I want.

That wood looks amazing. I like that idea a lot.

I remember reading something about all these kids in Brooklyn getting lead poisoning from a vendor at the Brooklyn flea that made furniture out of reclaimed barn wood. Anyway, I think just double check about chemicals etc - actual reclaimed wood and the distressed new stuff are pretty different in terms of chemicals.

Yeah, that is a thought. Especially if the kids are eating off the table. I thought lead was a problem just for painted stuff because the paint has lead. I've heard about that with repainted furniture from the 60s and 70s. Anything prior to 1978 is a risk. I think this wood is unvarnished though....

ETA: Now I'm reading up. Could be a problem if it is pressure treated too.... like old railway ties. But I do intend to have it varnished so that should seal in anything that is yucky in the wood, right?

I'm sure they will be able to tell you if you ask. I can try to look for the article I read, but i think it was old barn wood - that I think still had some paint on it. Anyway, I'm sure it's not an issue with this, just thought I'd mention it so you could ask.

I do think the table would look beyond amazing. And I think it's an amazing find. I'm saving the site as well!
