  • Home security

Dh wants to increase our home security and is frankly driving me nuts with what I consider overboard ideas. Currently we have a locked brick house, solid wood door, dog, fenced in yard with locked gates. I have never felt at risk in our neighborhood and I don't think any of our neighbors have ever been burgled. I am also home a lot, so it's not like our house ever looks empty. Some of dh's ideas are flood lights around the house exterior, camera, and security alarm. What kind of security do you have at home? Do you think he's going overboard or is he being reasonable?

We have a monitored alarm system with sensors on all doors and windows. I really like having it, especially for all the monitored smoke detectors, in case there is a fire while we're out of the house. Ours is $32.50 per month. I don't like exterior flood lights, mainly because our neighbors had one once, and it was like daylight coming in through my kids' windows all night long.

I'm planning on getting this soon. We feel pretty safe, but it would be nice to have when I'm home alone.

We have motion sensor lights in front of our garage, and we had them before at our old house.
Honestly, I don't think they are all that bad, but you have to be able to control how long they stay on (there's a timing switch on most models) so you don't go turning the neighborhood into a moon bounce.
I've been on the receiving end of the "spotlight from hell," and it isn't fun (as LM pointed out).

Instead of purchasing an in home system, maybe go the security lite version first, and see if he likes that? There are cheap clamps you can buy that prevent windows from opening past a certain point. The same goes for sliding doors and regular ones: anti-slide bars, anti-kick in devices.

RAIDS online is an app that will map specific crimes in your neighborhood/area.

We have Simplisafe and like it but it's never been put to the test. The house came with floodlights, but the neighbors houses are close enough that I try not to use them.

I worry close to zero about crime happening while any of us are home, but I think burglary is a lot more possible, so this is the level of security I'm willing to do.

We have flood lights on the outside of the house - we never turn them on, I need to get them updated to darkness sensors. We do have a motion sensor light on our garage doors which pretty much lights up the entire front of the house if its triggered. We do have an alarm system through FrontPoint, its $45/month I think - it has fire/heat sensors, door sensors, window sensors, glass break sensors about anything you could want and you choose every piece when you sign up. I can control it from my phone and I do like it.

We have motion sensored flood ligts and have ADT which includes window breaks, door alarms and smoke detection. I have thought about cameras ever since our friends outdoor furniture was stolen. She is not on my area but also lives in a nice, quiet hood. However, it seems like there is a trend for people to drive around nice neighborhoods scoping out outdoor stuff to steal and sell later.

We use a local company for 25 a month. We've got the basement and first floor windows and doors, glass break sensor, smoke and CO detectors, and a motion detector that we never use bc the cats set it off. We've been very happy with it, but get the occasional freakout when a window sensor loses contact. The alarm is LOUD. We mostly got it for when we go out of town as our house is rather isolated.

Do your doors beep obnoxiously every time they open/close? I really hate that. Our neighborhood is pretty nice but it's patchy so not solidly nice. A few people on our block have security systems and a few have the horrible flood lights. I too have been on the receiving end of those obnoxious lights. With the large amount of cats, squirrels, and dogs outside it would never turn off, which is why I'm against them. Our windows are newer and have stops that keep them from opening more than a certain amount. Dh just got a beware of dog sign as well.

Ours don't; we have a GE system.

We didn't get motion-sensor floodlights for that reason. They'd never be off! We do have them on a switch though.

Ours beep every time the doors open but you can choose to turn it off...like you can choose to turn off the motion sensors. DH hates the beeping but I like it. Our house is a ranch style long ass house. If I am on one side of the house, I would never hear if a door was opened on the other side. DH has scared the crap out of me because the dogs don't even hear when he comes in until he is on our side of the house.

Ours does as well but you an turn it off. I like it because I know when the kids go in and out or if a door beeps when we're all in the same room it's almost like having the alarm on when it isn't.

We had SimpliSafe at our last house and just installed it here. We set off the alarm accidentally a couple of times and it works well, they call right away. The beeping is a little annoying but I think it's good to have it on. It's not loud enough to wake the kid and you get used to it.

We have a monitored ADT system. I consider it a necessity for call nights!

We have a monitored security system. WE need it because we travel so much. Plus, I feel safer if the kids are here by themselves. When I had to stay with dh in the hospital, I didn't worry as much about them sleeping alone in the house.
