  • Master Bathroom Design Help

In Feb. or March, we are redoing our master bath. It is a REALLY tiny space with a shower (no tub), single vanity, toilet, and that is it. Probably the size of a non-master bath in a newer house. There's an issue with the drain that will require the shower pan to be ripped out, which will require the shower wall tile (which was apparently disgusting and sprayed white prior to us and is now peeling) and floor tile to be ripped out. We may try flip the vanity to another wall to give us some counterspace, but that depends on the quote.

At any rate, I want to decide what I want in detail before I have anyone come out to bid anything. I know I want a dark wood look ceramic floor, but I'm torn about the rest. I really like the rustic look, but the clean white or marble tile look with a dark floor looks nice too. We will be selling this house in 5-7 years, so I want something that will still look nice then.

Here are some pics I pinned:

Any ideas or input? I kind of wanted really large tiles in the shower for fear of what cleaning could be like. Anybody have subway tiles in a shower?

Oh yeah...and no windows so it is dark in there. Pics below

It's really a matter of taste!

I think the odd-shaped tiles will be super expensive. The subway tiles will be cheaper and are classic and fresh.

If it's a dark room, you might want to consider grey.

Grey isn't may favorite choice, but it can be really clean and fresh in a bathroom and make it look lighter.

The rustic bathrooms you pinned are going to be too dark AND too expensive.

I, personally, hate top-mounted bowl sinks. Hate them. Do an undermount. The bowl sinks take away counter space and are harder to clean. I don't know why anyone likes them. They are ridiculous.

Don't do a pedestal sink. You need storage.

I agree with Heidi about the bowl mounted sinks, we put one in our main floor powder room. They're fine in a powder room because you don't really use the counter space anyway but they would really eat up a master bath counter. Otherwise I'm no help, do you have a Tile Shop nearby, ours has lots of bath examples you can look at it, it helped for me to see things in person then just on houzz.

I agree with everything Heidi said. I'd try to lighten it up, since you don't have a window. I also hate bowl mounted sinks, and think you need the storage space. Could you consider a pocket door for more space in there? I saw a rehab addict episode where they did a shoebox bathroom, and it reminded me of yours.

I like the pics, Heidi. DH preferred a white look too, so I think we will end up going that route.

Definitely no pedastal sink. I hate how small the current one is. Either it is staying or we will do something bigger on the wall next to it (if $$$ allows). ETA: I was wondering why you guys were all "No bowl sink or pedestal sink" because I don't want either and then I realized they were in every pic!

Thoughts on quatrefoil tile as an accent? I found this and really like it, though I would do all white or all gray. I really like the quatrefoil tile, but I'm a little afraid it will date quickly. We could do penny tile instead.

Just wanted to say that I love subway tile! Looks clean and classic and fresh. Totally agree with an under mount sink. I also like the grey floor 'woodesq' tiles. If I ever redo my bathroom I would also use small hex tiles on the floor with black or another color accent then tie that accent into the subway tiles in the bath/shower.

I agree with Heidi, too. I love the images you pinned, especially toward the top of the page.

I hope you'll keep us updated along the way once you get started. I love following along on people's reno projects.

I loved yours. I'm excited that you are moving because I'm assuming you are the type of person to rip a new place apart again

You what is awesome...we are remarkably close to being DONE with a lot of what we wanted to do with this house! I'm looking forward to enjoying it for 5-6 more years with only minor, fun projects

We did subway tile as a backsplash in our kitchen with a light grey/white granite. So kind of the same color scheme you're considering. I love how it opened up our space. I bet you'll be really happy.

We used dark grey grout. I've seen it done really well in bathrooms and it may be a bit easier to maintain. Just something else to consider.

Hey, how do you find somebody to do this kind of work? We need to retile our bathtub - some of the tile just broke off - and I have no idea who to call.
