Yes! Gardening Is definitely a post baby-toddler-preschooler-puppy stage. It is so beautiful to watch though. Something to look forward to. Just keep the kids watered and alive.

Our next-door neighbor is a master gardener (seriously, that's a thing)! We don't even try to compete. I'm just trying to keep the plants alive that were here when we moved in... And I've gotten rid of one flower bed already.

Ha. We won the lottery here, our previous owners owned a landscape business, but refused to do anything at his own house. The neighbors told us the city came out and got rid of a bunch of poison ivy and billed him! So we got crazy neighborhood points when we planted bulbs and mowed our lawn regularly. Do not attempt to keep up with the previous owners.

My front yard is no muss, no fuss (shrubs and well established big trees).
My back yard has raised beds on concrete with veggies and herbs - I didn't want to fight with grass or maintain anything in the yard. 😀
The chickens handle any bugs that come our way, and the lawn service mows/edges/trims everything in 15 minutes flat.

I'm sure the HOA will not approve of chickens. LOL

I called the lawn service. Our retaining wall is listing and I wanted him to take a look anyway. He's going to come out and tell me what I've got, recommend some easy perennials. If he can give me a decent price, maybe he will do the work too.

It's 65 in KS today. Should I be concerned that my daffodil shoots are sprouting? It could snow all of February yet.

Daffodils are hardy, last year mine got snowed on several times and thrived.

If the bulbs are exposed, should I put more soil on them? If there are shoots now, will I be without any in the spring?

MrsK Those look great! My poor daffodils couldn't handle the recent weird weather.

I photographed them yesterday, before the frost. I'm thinking that they are kind of crowded and I might relocate some on the fall. Nearly every thing else in my yard blooms in the summer. I went with a variety of daffodils to maximize the blooming season. There should be late spring blooms too.

scrub-jay. The bed behind the Arbor has 12 rose bushes. Would they be harmed if I planted some bulbs among them? It's such a large area and it will be several months before we have roses. I hate to leave it bare all spring.

I'm not an expert, but roses are super particular with soil ph & nutrients, I'd be worried the bulbs would deplete the soil. I've never really seen roses with daffodils. Most rose gardeners (of which I am not) seem to favor things like marigolds (annuals - replant ever year, pretty ground cover) or herbs (mint, basil, lavender maybe?) because those all complement roses by being naturally pest-repellent. Pests (like aphids) love roses.

ETA: Don't grow mint. It's terribly invasive. But marigolds would be pretty.
