Does anyone have solar panels on their house? Has anyone looked into leasing vs investing long term? What happens with the snow in the winter?

We looked about five years back and were told it wasn't worth it. We live on a shady lot in a notoriously cloudy and cold location. I should check again to see if the tech has improved or if we have any options.Angie

Snow? What is this snow you speak of? There's a local company that does a lot of installations around here, but I confess we really haven't looked into it. If we're going to retrofit the house we've got a long list of other improvements to do first, ones that might even be more eco-friendly than adding solar.
I'm not sure the tax credits apply if you just lease the equipment?Alison

We want some but the stupid power company here blocked any additional solar panels. We just have solar panels for our water heaters. New tech is coming out in June where we can have them installed and the power stored in a battery unit-- will bypass the energy company.
We have a ton of sun though-- strong sun. And high utility rates. With the tax benefits expiring next year I definitely plan to have 20-30 panels by 2016. Pricey though- like $20,000 or more pricey.
I've also heard that leasing isn't a good option-- investment wise.Peggy
Aloha from paradise! And the other side of training!
