  • Help me organize!

So we've got what's currently a guest bedroom/hobby storage/junk storage room that will need to be a nursery in the next 6 months or so. We've also got a room that serves sort of as an office/secondary living area. A lot of what's currently in the guest room will need to go into the office. We've got to seriously de-clutter and organize to make it all work.

    Here's what we're dealing with...

Office, mostly hand-me downs, IKEA, and OfficeMax stuff, plus a lot of clutter. This is right off of the foyer, so it's pretty bad that this is one of the first things you see when you walk into the house. I'd like to keep the couch and TV in there, along with some kind of desk/shelving unit for the computer stuff and books.

Guest bedroom. The bed will go in the attic until we have space for it again. The shelf needs to be tidied and moved into the office somehow. The contents of the closet need to go away too - these are mostly office supplies, miscellaneous electronics, and an assortment of medical supplies that found their way home in pockets.

    Any ideas?

    Is the closet walk-in?

The first thing I'd do is add build-ins to the closet. We used two ikea billy bookcases and added shelves in DDs closet.

I'd get bins for the shelves in the closet and more for the black bookshelf. That way you can throw yarn or toys in them and they are hidden.

I'll post pics of DDs room when she wakes.

That closet is in the guest room which will be baby #2's room - the wire shelf will stay, but it needs to be emptied to make room for baby stuff. What you see if half of it - the other half is a safe that unfortunately has to stay, so the left door is going to get a lock so only the right half will open and be used for baby stuff. There isn't a closet in the office, just a coat closet in the foyer, so we need to find a way to empty that shelf and get it into some sort of storage into the office - or get rid of the stuff.

My plan is to get bins, drawers, and doors for the craft shelf and move it into the office...somewhere. I could turn it on its side and put it under the TV in place of the other TV stand if that wall is big enough - I still need to measure - in which case we need an extra shelf or something for the DVDs and games currently in it, or we could incorporate it into a new shelving/desk unit on the other wall.

      Like this maybe?

Response to my e-mail from the organizer:

For the first person (the Wife), the charge is $40/hour. The second person (the Worker Bee) is $25/hour. If you need guys (the Husband) for moving furniture or handyman tasks, the charge is $40/hour.

If you'd like, we can schedule a time for me to come out and see the rooms and after that I can give you an estimate. There is no charge for this.

Does that sound reasonable? It can't hurt to get an estimate I guess. I know we could do this ourselves, but realistically with hubby and me both working full time and chasing after E otherwise, well, it hasn't happened. Some of the stuff in the closet has been accumulating since before we got married - meaning we've moved it all at least twice now. I know I should just toss the extra office supplies and electronics that we aren't using, but it's hard to do sometimes!

I just made myself a to-do list on Wunderlist (that I can share with hubby) with a list of everything in the house that needs organizing. The list just keeps getting longer though... I think I'm nesting early.

I don't know anything about organizer pricing, but the first thing I'd do before even hiring anyone is purge, purge, purge! I hate clutter, so I'm kind of biased, but you should get rid of multiples or anything else you don't absolutely need. (You only need one stapler even if you've got 3 in working condition, etc.) Once you've got a clean slate it will be easier to tell exactly what kind of storage you need.

I'm kind of hoping the organizer will help me do that. I hate clutter too, I'm just obviously really bad at it. Paper is our biggest problem.

After getting addicted to reading various blogs on minimalism and essentialism, I'm a convert. It's still difficult at times, but we're well on our way to meeting and exceeding our 2015 things OUT of our house in 2015 (New Years Resolution).

I'm pretty merciless when it comes to stuff and am not sentimentally attached to everything.
(It also helps with frequent moves to parse down the I loves and the donates).

We basically have a spare room that holds all of DH's extra must have stuff... And that has been my compromise.

I do a lot of "How often do you use/How often do you wear?" questioning.

                    Progress!

Decorations to go in the garage, baby clothes to be sorted better and either put away for baby #2 or donated.

Done for the day! All clothes are folded and sorted by size in the boxes.

I'm pretty proud of myself. I did get rid of at least a garbage bag full of stuff too.

                            That rate sounds *very* reasonable.

My sister got me a book on cleaning that's really amazing. I hate cleaning and have always felt unorganized. This book really takes the shaming out of it, and explains things from step 0. I am actually excited to get it together!
