  • Front steps

Yesterday we had a contractor out to give us an estimate on some insulation work, so while he was out here we asked him also about some exterior work, and while we were at THAT, we decided on a whim to have our whole front porch replaced. The contractor asked, "So do you want pretty much the same style?" and we were like, "Um...sure?"

So now before work really gets underway I want to have some design ideas to play with. A little help? My first foray onto Houzz hasn't helped, because homes tend to have full porches or just a couple stone steps, not the kind of situation we have.

The contractor wants to make the railings and balusters out of composite material, same as the decking (but still white to match the trim). He said for the floor part we could look at changing the color from the current gray to something that would contrast better with the house. He's taking out the concrete that the current porch is built onto, so it will be built up on posts like a regular deck and I guess we'd want to decide about there being solid sides to it, or lattice, or just the empty space underneath?

How would you get started with figuring out what this project should look like?? Any ideas of where to look for historic homes like ours?

Honestly? If I were to replace your front porch, I'd go all out and make a big old covered porch with lots of seating. And a swing. Porches need swings.

LOL, thanks. You can see the red camp chairs in the second pic -- that's our fire pit and where we hang out. There's also a more sitting-friendly porch in the back. We really just need the steps to get us to the door! Ideally, without the decking falling off because the glue between it and the concrete is failing, and without the bannisters and endcaps rotting off because we have such terrible luck with trim materials in this house. But everything on Houzz is full covered porches so I guess a lot of people agree with you.

I love it the way it is and I'd probably go with something similar. Your house is beautiful!

I love the house and think the size of the porch is fine. My only thought would be to dress up the railing style a bit--maybe something like this:

Definitely a beautiful house. I smell salt air just looking at it.

            1. I admit "portico" was my first thought reading your post. A place to close your umbrella without getting rained on and a bit of protection for the front door and added dimension to the front of the house.

            2. Can you put stone or something stone-looking where the concrete is now? I like that better than lattice or open, both of which make me think "welcome, feral cats and rabid possums! Come give birth under here!" Plus it would tie in with your lovely raised beds, there. Here's wood and stone together:

            3. A lot of this house exterior stuff is so regional--have you driven around the island to steal ideas from your neighbors?

A portico was my first thought too. Nothing too big but one that ties in with the house.
You have such a pretty house. It's a nicer version of our first home, which I miss dearly.

Cool, thanks guys! I knew someone would have some good Pinterest mojo. I will also drive around to see what is done in my area, and try to remember the architect's name so I can see how else he did entryways -- he has a pretty unique style on these renovated historic homes he's known for.

Beautiful house! We have a porch that cannot fit chairs and people on it at the same time. We can barely greet anyone at the entrance because it's pretty tight. When it rains, packages and people have to share a tiny space. If/when we remodel, I'd like to have a covered porch to accommodate these things. It's so mild here, that it'd be nice to be able to have the space to hang out under a covered space. Just some thoughts that I have with porches... Let us know what you decide to do!

Yeah, I've seen some porticos and other covered entrances and porches that make me envious. But I just don't think it's right on our house. A couple of days ago I snuck up on the other house in our area that was done by the same architect. The front steps are handled pretty similarly.

(I know it's a terrible photo and you have to peer through the tree, but they had electricians and stuff in the driveway so I was being a total creeper to snap this!)

We do get about half the rain you do. I think there's been exactly one instance in the past 6 years where I needed to shoo a visitor inside the door instead of letting them get wet on the doorstep!
