Vegetable Garen in Pots

Has anyone ever done a vegetable garden in pots? We are in a rental and live in a very old neighborhood where there is concern for lead in the soil due to decades of lead paint used on the exterior of the old homes. Needless to say, I will feel better knowing our family is eating veggies that were grown in the soil in pots. I'm looking for simple ideas that will be fun to do with the kids. Maybe a few tomato plants, cucumbers, peppers, herbs etc. Anyone have success with anything particular in pots before?

Yes! In Cleveland and Phoenix I had some lovely container grown tomatoes. You've mentioned a lot of warm-weather plants, and I don't know how long the growing season is where you live. Also, your big challenge with all of those plants might be blossom-end rot. A steady (but not excessive) supply of water, and calcium in your potting mix or fertilizer, will go a long way to avoiding it. Good luck!

We did Tomatoes, Peppers, and Strawberries in pots when I was a kid...but I was in Florida. I've done strawberries, parsley, and other herbs with my kids in containers in the Midwest. I've also seen lemon trees grown in pots indoors here.

I can actually help!!!! I was in Az and during hubbys first year in med school I got the itch to garden. We lived in apartments and I grew everything in pots.

So, I was stingy and clueless I added three plants in one container (not a good idea) but all my herbs were in pots (small pots-also not a good idea)
I also bought three books all having to do with gardening in small areas and in pots and had a lot of good info. I would also check out Pinterest (awesome ideas in there)
The one thing that killed the whole gardening business was that we had to move after first year. So I had to transfer everything and let's just say my mom inherited my whole garden including the pomegranate tree I had decided to grow in our balcony 😬 I loved that tree! But also not a good idea cause it grew too fast and too heavy in a pot. Hubby thought I lost my mind when I said we would be taking it everywhere with us.... This was three years ago.... Haven't lifted a finger to garden since then

I grew tomatoes in pots last year and they did really well. I was giving them away, I had so many. Herbs are easy too. I would give peppers, spinach, leaf lettuce, green onions, chives, peas or pole beans a try too if you have space for bigger planters. Cucumbers may be more difficult as they are climbers and love space but maybe with a really good staking system.. We have a May to September growing season and I grew all of the above last year. They way I look at it, it's worth a try anyway. Not everything will be a success but you learn from it all.
I'm getting some seeds started indoors already this year. Love gardening!

We gardened in sheep/stock water tanks when we lived in a condo. It actually ended up looking pretty cool and we had tons of tomatoes. Easy as can be and everything really thrived.

Actually wanting to do this. I figure that it should be deep enough to have 1 or 2 corn stalks.

Some things are even better in a pot. For example, I grow my mint and spearmint in pots because they will take over a garden and choke everything else around it.
