Bed Help

We are going to get a King size bed. I've had a queen forever and I feel lost. There are two types of King bed - cal king and king. Which is better? Why are there two kinds? Is one better?

Mattress. We will have a platform bed- as I prefer those. I have heard about the king mattress lump problem. How do I avoid getting a mattress that does that? Any brand recommendations? I can't do foam mattresses - they make we sweat - please no recommendations for those.

Cal King is a little longer and a tiny bit narrower. Don't get that, though; we had one for years (DH is tall), and nobody ever has anything that size in stock, so you have to see what you want, then order it in the right size and wait, and lots of things just don't come in that size. Not worth it.

No idea on the lump; suggestions I've seen range from "use the middle to wear it down at the same rate" to "buy a higher quality mattress that won't wear down so quickly where you sleep on it" and "put a bed board between the boxsprings and the mattress to eliminate the middle ridge from the two boxsprings". Your best bet is probably a mattress that has some kind of guarantee and doesn't consider hills and valleys "normal wear".

I can't remember exactly which one though. We do have sort of a lump in the middle though, with valleys on each side where hubby and I sleep. It doesn't bother me though.

Thanks. Our bed won't have box springs, hopefully that will help. It's such a cluster trying to research mattresses. We have an old one right now that's was randomly picked at crate and barrel when we got a bed (that since died) 15+ years ago. It's been ok so that we haven't needed to change it. I'm going with the same frame we have right now, since I like it a lot. Pic below. It's pretty much the reason we have stuck with a queen for so long. However, I'm not sleeping well and bed size is the main issue- dh takes up too much room.

We love our Cal King. DH is 6'4" and he hates tucked sheets so this gives him plenty of space for his toes, etc. We don't mind at all that it's more narrow and I don't mind ordering sheets, bed sets, etc

Mattress depth? I can have the slats lowered on the bed frame to accommodate a deeper mattress. I think our current mattress is 9". Are mattresses even than thin anymore? Should I just have the slats lowered? Ack. They come with a 1/2 - 3/4" lip to keep the mattress in place. You can lower them 2 inches to help with taller mattresses. I haven't picked out the mattress yet, but I want to order the bed as it takes 6-8 weeks to receive it.

Have you ever listened to the Surprisingly Awesome podcast? They did an episode all about picking a mattress (#12, Mattresses). Basically, they recommend finding a mattress that's between $800 and $1,500. Anything more than that is probably not going to get you that much better of a mattress. If you lay on the mattress in the store for 15 minutes and you like it, that's the one for you! The brand has more to do with the shopping experience (nicer store, more knowledgeable salespeople, etc.) than the quality of the mattresses. That's what I took away from the podcast, anyway.

We just got a king from Costco in January and we LOVE it. It was like $800 I think and a good brand but I cannot remember which one right now. We prefer firm mattresses though.

I've ordered a mattress! We went to a local store that had a lot of mattresses and tried them out. I was disappointed to find that all of the mattresses had foam on the top. I found one I liked that had artificial latex on the top instead and it was ok. It was also $$$. I wasn't ready to commit. Dh suggested I research alternatives after we got home. I stumbled upon an apartment therapy post about organic mattresses. From there I researched all sorts and ended up with deciding on an innerspring mattress with cotton and wool on top. No gels, latex, foam, or chemical fire retardant. It's a Royal Pedic cotton and wool innerspring mattress. They have a great reputation but are $$$. They are very firm. I know Dh will be happy for sure. It might be a little firm for me. I'm going to wait and see. If it is I will get a cotton topper for my side. Overall I'm happy I hit the submit order button.
