  • Pomegranate Tree

We just discovered a pomegranate tree in our backyard, but I have no idea what to do with them. Does anyone know when we should pick them, or what I can do with all the pomegranates once we get them off the tree?

I want to say that they are a late fall/winter fruit? I usually start seeing them in stores around Thanksgiving

Please feel free to ship them my way.... Saying that hubby LOVES them is an understatement. Depending on the tree they will either be red or pinkish. And you crack it and eat the seeds. It's boring for me and too much work but hubby loves to sit with a bowl and pick at the little seeds, grab a handful and toss them in his mouth. You can also put them on a salad

You could probably crush out the juice too if you have a lot of them.

My Sunset Western Garden book says, "Pomegranates ripen in fall; harvest them when they reach full color. Fruit left on the tree is likely to split and rot, especially if weather is rainy. Can be stored for up to 7 months in the refrigerator." My Joy of Cooking says, "If you live where the fruit is available ripe and in abundance, you may feel it is sacrilegious to eat them any way but plain, or chilled, with yogurt." However, it offers a recipe for Pomegranate Molasses that requires 5 pounds of pomegranates to get 1 cup of syrup. The Ball Blue Book has a Pomegranate Jelly (about 5 pounds pomegranate to 3 1/2 cups juice to 6 half-pints jelly.)
