The refrigerator in our house that we moved into is dying. It's old- 13 years according to its model number. It's a side by side and is having trouble keeping the freezer consistently cold and the fridge is too cold in spots. All the appliances are the same age and white. It's likely in the next few years we'll have to change them all out. Im debating between going stainless steel (the non smudge type) or staying white. Also thinking I'll stay with a side by side. I had a French door in our last house. I liked it but the freezer door was a pain. The most restricting factor will be size as the fridge has a wall and cabinets around it. Anyone have any advice, brand recc's or preferences?

No good advice, but I'm interested to hear what others say. Our Sub-Zero is almost 20 years old, and I'm nervous it's going to break down before we're ready to buy another ($$). I've been looking for other brands that have the same Sub-Zero look & large size, but with a lower price tag, but so far I haven't come up with much. 😕

FWIW, I loved the French door in our Portland house. I guess it's just a personal preference. I also like the look of stainless over white, but I keep hearing that white is coming back in style, so who knows.

The bad thing about white is that it yellows over time. The bottom of our fridge is yellow. Our whole kitchen is white/beige making me think I should go stainless but it will look more out of place until the other appliances get replaced.

Stainless has way better resale value.

We are obsessed with our stainless. It has French doors on top and a freezer drawer on the bottom. My dh is tall so this is helpful. The drawer can sometimes get a little unorganized but that's not the fridges fault.

We got a new stainless side by side to replace the black one that was in our house. Most of our other appliances are black, but we decided it wasn't that big of a deal. Ours is a Samsung, and we like it overall.

I think you are right. When we first walked into the kitchen I thought- eh, it's kind of dated but it's still in good shape.-

I'll just say that I hate our drawer freezer. It is so hard to keep organized, and it always seems to be full.

I'm not a big fan of the drawer freezer either. It often didn't close all the way leading to issues on our last fridge. I'm hunting through fridges by size. Most french door fridges are too wide and tall for our space so I may have to do a side by side, which I'm ok with. I prefer no water and ice in the door too. Though most have it.

Why do you prefer no water/ice on the door? We've never had it, so I'm just curious.

A couple reasons. We don't drink cold or iced water, it takes up a lot of room in the freezer and on the front of the fridge. I also don't like the esthetic. And if I'm being extra anal we have RO water but it can't be hooked up to the fridge so that water wouldn't be as clean.

I got one. I went to NFM yesterday as they had the lowest price and it was delivered today. It fits perfect!
