  • Weird cigarette odor

We came home last night from DD’s birthday party, followed 5 minutes later by my mom and stepdad. I came down stairs and noticed a weird earthy smell. We have noticed this smell coming from our downstairs bathroom before, but it seems to come and go. We lit some candles, and it seemed to get better. But then, it started smelling really strongly of cigarettes. We don’t know anyone that smokes, and we have been here 6.5 years. We moved some gifts away, to the basement, and it got better. We went to bed.

Overnight, DD woke us up and we could smell it in our bedroom, 2 floors up. This morning, we got rid of the boxes from the gifts we presumed smelled bad, lit more candles, vacuumed. The smell went mostly away, confined to the garbage can in the garage. Then, it came back with a vengeance a couple of hours ago. The whole lower level of the house smells, and it’s driving us nuts. And scaring us a little bit.

What could it be???? We don’t have a fireplace and have gas and electric.

Do you have a crawl space? They can get musty.

We had this problem in our old house in one room - it would release old cigarette smell when really humid.
I used to use this to keep the smells at bay, but it was really soaked into the wood all around the room (all wood panelling) so there was no getting rid of it totally.
